EPSXe Widescreen mode
« on: June 01, 2015, 01:15:27 pm »
Ok - so does someone know how the heck this works? It's just been added as an option on the Android version. There's no real info on the ESPXe android or general websites, and a search gives me a bunch of ancient info about stretching the screen. This is not stretching the screen, but stretching graphic overlays, like score, speed, what have you, and actually rendering the game across the full screen with what looks like proper aspect ratio and field of view.

How is this possible? Mind slightly blown.

And, if it's a real simple explanation, with a "duh, you didn't know this?" attached - please refrain from laughing at me...   ;D

A couple more photos. Colin McRae Rally 2.0. Neither this game, nor Blasto! (above) have an actual widescreen option. They play smoothly, with no noticeable speed hit vs. the 4:3 regular aspect ratio. The Colin Mcrae pics show that all bit-mapped items (like the sun and sky, as well as speed and map info) are, indeed stretched to fit the screen, but the road and car are rendered correctly.

I suppose they just calculate the graphics that are next to the actual display in 4:3 and they are rendered. It's something similar to what is used in NullDC, reicast or PCSX2 in PC. I don't know if it in ePSXe all games wlll run fine this way, in PC at least some games were not renedered correctly.

Wait! Which is which pic?

All pics are the full screen of my G5a - first pic, standard 4:3 ratio, second pic, the new widescreen mode.

It's funny, you think this wouldn't be much of a change. But I've owned a Playstation since a year after they came out, and firing up the original GranTurismo in a REAL widescreen mode is like a whole different animal. It's like playing a new game. Same with Blasto! - it was weird (in a good way), turning and moving with the full view and proper aspect ratio. I'd just love to know what's happening behind the scenes to make it happen!

Here's Madden 2002 widescreen, with some glitching during the start of a play. The missing data becomes visible as soon as the ball is snapped and there is camera movement, making me wonder if widescreen simply renders the data cache. Which I believe is sort of what you wrote, Skelton (thank you, BTW). Being mostly a layman, I can't be sure, but I assume data is cached to speed rendering (or rendered "off screen" for discovery as the camera moves).

The Madden is a totally different experience, as well, played in widescreen mode. Obviously, PS3 and 4 owners are used to widescreen games, but when you see a game you are totally used to being the old standard 4:3 ratio suddenly opened up, it's like watching an old "pan and scan" VHS copy of Raiders Of The Lost Ark, then watching the widescreen digital copy on your HD TV...

Well, I'm done. I'm supposed to be working, not firing up PSone games in widescreen...  ;) Any other thoughts are, of course, welcome!

I tried widescreen mode but it made it 4:3, so I put it back to full-stretched. Am I doing something wrong? :(

Got my answer!

I decided to try the contact info at EPSXe, and they responded almost immediately! Words in brackets [] added by me, to the response by Carlos L:

"Hello,

It is similar to the supported [feature] in other emulators (pcsxr or fpse), it hacks internal GTE [geometry transformation engine] calculation to change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9. Because it is a hack, it will fail in some games, specially when a game is using layers not using the GTE to calculate the aspect ratio.

Regards."

Still, even if it doesn't work in all games, it's great when it does work. Very cool!

What game did you try it with? It won't work on all of them. Safe one to try (just to see if you're doing it right) is GranTourismo, that one worked for me. Also, videos and menus will simply be stretched, so be certain to get into the actual gameplay.
