It seems that newer versions of Android aren't very friendly for controlling via gamepads or remote controls. The reason appears to be that the default button "focus" colour is transparent, so while it's theoretically possible to change the currently selected button in a dialogue, or option in a settings page with the dpad, it's not possible to actually see which item is currently focused. Does anybody know if it's possible to change the value of the default "focus" colour?

I believe if you enter developer mode (tap the build number several times in About), there is a Show Pointer Location option.  That may be what you are looking for.  I've not tried the option though.

Nope; that just gives an overlay showing the co-ordinates of any touch events.

There used to be a Show Touches option, but I don't see it on my Pixel C anymore.  If you have that option in yours, it should put a cursor on the screen.

Nope, that just puts a blob on the screen whenever you touch it
