Android Emulator overview - share your preferred setup
« on: May 20, 2012, 03:53:42 pm »
I thought that it might be a good idea to create some sort of overview thread allowing new android gaming handheld device owners to get an idea on which emulator to use for which system.

In case you guys are interested I could edit or even extend this post on a regular basis and create a consolidated overview, posting all of your recommended emulators in a sorted list.

If you would like to participate, please post your current setup or individual suggestion to this list in this format:

Emulated System
Emulator Name
Link to Play-Store or Source URL
Price
Reason why you're using/prefering it

Thanks

-jan

Mame4droid is free, not commercial. And SNESEmu is not free, but commercial.

For the .emu apps from Robert Broglia I'd say that they are defin. worth the buck as there is a big difference compared to many other emulators available for free. Most of them are based on freely available sources from emulators for x86 platforms, but I guess that it consumes a lot of time and dedicated work to port and finetune them for the android system. SNES9X EX from the same developer is free (I guess for copyright/IP reasons).

I like the fact that they all perform well and have a standardized user interface and think it's good to support a developer that invests into the further improvement of the apps. Another good example would be FPse - The Playstation Emulator.

Differences between paid and free emulator are sometimes minor, but this is the whole idea of the thread. To discuss and recommend each others favorites. This would allow a lot of users to gather all the information they need in one spot before trying a lot of emulators wasting precious play-time ;)

AFAIK is Droid800 (an Atari800 port) not further developed anymore since there is now an "official" Atari800 port called Colleen.

Mame4droid reloaded is a great emulator as well.

PSX4droid is good too but don't buy the market version(3.0.5). Search for version 3.0.7 which is not on the market.

SDLvice for c64 emulation

Just a note 2600.emu does not play atari 5200 games

I believe Colleen (Atari 8-bit emulator) also emulates the 5200 as those two are using the same hardware. But I didn't try it because I don't have an Android device but the manual states that you should add the 5200 bios rom to the emulator.

You're welcome. But I now see that you put Ataroid under the 5200 section while that is a 2600 emulator.

This is great information. Have we thought about adding an Android section to our wiki for this type of info? Or is there another wiki out there that would be better for Android gaming and device info?

This spreadsheet can be very useful for having a matrix with every Android device with the best emulator for each console and each handheld.

we are pleased that our comparison table is useful here too!
It's a good reason to continue to keep up to date. Feel free to send us any feedback you www.open-consoles.com!

Also, i use Snesdroid https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ca.halsafar.snesdroid&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd on my G16 and S5110. It's a very good emulator !

I could not find a good ZX Spectrum emulator, which works with hardware keys. Xpectroid seems is the best variant.

Have you tried Marvin?https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cz.dejvice.rc.Marvin&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImN6LmRlanZpY2UucmMuTWFydmluIl0.

This emulator has many disadvantages on my system (jxd s5110, fake 1Ghz ICS).

1) often terminates when opening game (arkanoid 1)
2) can not open the game (cauldron 1)
3) errors in the rendering (arkanoid 2)
4) in some games can not be controlled via hardware keys (dizzy 1)
5) on-screen keyboard has only a few buttons and it can not be hidden.
6) You can not assign hardware keys on application actions (hide/show on-screen keyboard for example) , only a game joystick.

Xpectroid (based on GP2Xpectrum) does not have these problems. but it has a strange error: lag every 0.5 sec. Perhaps this is due to bugs in ICS firmware.
