Play the game normally. Use only save states. But when you start the game again after exiting. you have to 'press any Button'on the warning screen. Then load from the title screen. Normal saves don't work. Used this trick on dda320 and dta330, firmware was stock. Works fine saving both ways on my s601.
I tried this method as well and could not get it to work for me. Too bad.
