Retro Gaming Magazine Coming in 2014
« on: September 01, 2013, 12:12:32 am »
Okay, due to popular demand, we will be launching Retro Gaming Magazine in 2014. Yes, this is two full years after the original scheduled launch that was scuttled after we added more staff than probably was required to launch the first shuttle. We have streamlined the team considerably, taken a new approach to marketing (learned that hard lesson with GoB Mag) and are working a new angle (think tabloids but for games).

We will be launching the new site soon, which will be in line with what we already offer on our other sites as far as style and design.

Some info on the mag as it stands now:

60 to 80 pages gloss pages like Gamefan on 80# paper
No reviews
No news
Features and editorials
Print and digital versions
Subscriptions from day one will be available (save by subscribing)

If you are interested in helping us craft the magazine we currently have a couple of things we are looking for community input on:

First, the cover. We are running a contest to create the cover. We are looking for clear, high resolution, photos of games in a pile. The games in question would be from SNES, Genesis and TG-16/PC-Engine.

The chosen picture will earn the person that submitted it a free copy of the first issue in print and digital. This prize is valued at about $21 total.

Second, we are needing votes on that cover feature. The article is being referred to as "Cross Platform Gaming" at the moment. It will focus on games that were available for SNES and Genesis. We need votes on which version of each game was the better of the two.

We will also be doing a feature on the TG-16/PC-Engine in a title specific "must own" piece. Votes are being collected for this too.

We ask that each person submitting votes to please keep them to about 5 games per system. This is because we may use your top 5 list in the mag. If we do, you will receive a free copy of the digital. This prize is valued at about $1 to $3 (we haven't set the price yet).

Don't know what games were shared between the Genesis and SNES? No problem, the list is below:

I'd subscribe to that for sure!

Edit:
Try to get it into Zinio, it's where most of my mags are from :)

I am working on getting the digital everywhere we possibly can so that we can reach the maximum number of readers.  We won't be charging $4.99 for the digital either and subscribers to the print will get the digital version free, unlike other magazines.  We also will be offering digital subscriptions for those that are not keen on waiting on, or paying for, print versions.

Here are a couple of pages that spurred on the cross platform idea for the first issue:

We are currently working on the site for the mag, right now it is pointing at an old mockup that was created for the announcement - www.retrogamingmag.com

That is a mockup of one of the pages.  It is not final by any means, but let the comments fly.  I have heard some rough ones over this already, which is cool, just remember, this is not the final product (I know it is missing the text before anyone mentions it).

No offense, but that's kinda pretty ugly if i'm being honest.

Here's some competition (if it's not you, if it is - huge kudos because it looks like it's goin to be brilliant!):

That's not the only competition, there's also the well-established Retro Gamer Mag:
http://www.retrogamer.net/

I'm liking what I've seen on www.retrogamingmag.com so far, the article on the Genesis port of the GBA Silent Hill VN was particularly interesting. I'd certainly appreciate the chance to read more articles like these in print!

Sorry to send this thread in this direction again, but this is the last day of their Kickstarter and I'm now a backer. I've been backing print material Kickstarters lately, I guess I just find them to be low risk projects.

The contributors to Retro magazine are a who's who of the retro gaming scene. But they had my pledge when I saw they've got Seanbaby.

As for retrogamingmag.com (ugh, this is getting confusing!) I agree the style is a little ugly for a professionally printed magazine. It looks looks waaaaay too old. Like a late 90's gaming magazine. The modern style is very hard to perfect. But on the other hand, it's a pretty good style for a webazine. So maybe on a website is where retrogamingmag should stay.

They got my pledge when I saw they've got Andy Eddy. VG&CE was my first gaming mag.  8)

What!? Aladin was a much beter game one SNES than Genesis.... the Genesis one was just prettier... and Aladin had a sword, that was cool to.

Back on topic.
Sounds good, but agree that the layouts are... ugly. Old SMS box art ugly...

I think the 90s design is intentional because it jives with the retro spirit.

Originally, I was going for a "90's" game mag style but as the fans have spoken, the mag is now going in a new direction with layouts and the like.  Something more in line with what other mags are offering, something slightly more mainstream.

We are working on bringing articles such as the Silent Hill on Genesis to the mag.

Our first issue will feature a comparison of Sega Genesis to SNES games that were on both systems (as the original post in this thread mentioned).  The games chosen and the version that wins is based on votes from fans.

Here is another failed mock up that did not pass the internal voting amongst the staff (the right side was to be the SNES pics but development didn't get that far):

and we are working in this vein now:

Sorry, it looks like this thread is doomed to forever be compared to the other retro gaming magazine upstarts.

I backed the Retro Videogame Magazine Kickstarter and they just revealed their issue #1 cover. Looks awesome!! I can't wait!

Rob Duenas of Sketchcraft (and upcoming Gamecave Magazine) did that cover for Retro Magazine.  Rob is the former Art Director for Gamefan Magazine's rebooted attempt where I worked with him starting between issues 5 and 6.  He is a good guy and a rocking artist.  For more of his work you can catch his show-

http://www.sketchcraft.com

As far as Retro Gaming Magazine, we are going to launch in later January/early February.  Partly to give Retro Magazine their time in the limelight and to help ease  the pain on the wallets of the fans.  Launching in late January will have our magazines release in an alternating manner rather than both at the same time each month.
