the userland runs off of miniSD, so who cares :p
I've received my Zipit Z2 now and now I just need to find some use for it. Got a ubuntu 9.04 userland running on it, and it's pretty nice being able to use Irssi via Wifi with such a portable device.
Compiled wejp's GMU on the device, but came to some problems because SDL needs to be rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise, and I don't have a clue how to achieve that.
Other than that I'm sure GMU compiled fine (after a rigorous process of compile, fail on lib dependency, install lib dependency, compile, etc..), so once I figure out this SDL problem it should be pretty nice.
The Z2 handles xorg nicely, once it's configured correctly (to rotate 90 degress counter clockwise), and with a desktop/wm (matchbox/fluxbox) and mouse emulation.
I'll probably be playing with it some more tonight, and getting Doom up and running, so it'll atleast be fun :D
Stephanie:
I have a couple of the original Zipits around the house. They were similar albeit much less capable; 2MB of flash and 16MB of ram. I've had one running as a webserver "just because I could" for around 5 years now:

Cheers!
p.s. probably all the links on that site are dead; it's been ages since I had any involvement in the zipit scene.

Great stuff, and not a bad idea either! the Z2 would definitely use a lot less power and make less noise than my current local webserver! :P

I know this thread is a bit old, but since I got a Zipit Z2 myself and I built my own rootfs, I thought it might be worth mentioning it here. This rootfs also comes with Gmu included.
rootfs information & download
Since version 1.2.14 SDL supports rotating the framebuffer. This can be done with the environment variable "SDL_VIDEO_FBCON_ROTATION". In case of the Z2 you have to set it to "CCW" (rotate counter clock wise).
