I discovered why they said re-purpose the Z2s, i.e. run community linux variants. It seems that if stock native OS runs that there is potential for the device to go into an infinite boot loop situation if one of the native apps is triggered. There seem to be a couple methods to attempt to recover "relatively" easily however it sounds like the success rate is NOT high using those methods and the best is adding a serial connector which would involve soldering on very small pads so beyond quite a few people. From what I gathered from the IRC logs that I've read so far(into late August now) uBoot installation seems to be the safest thing to do which limits the community linux variants useable, but several of them still seem to be at least as active as people are with the A320...
I'm going to do some more reserach before ordering any I think, as I doubt that they'll be selling out any time soon given that they apparently still have some left and AFAICT have done zero marketing/advertising of the "sale" beyond the blurb on linux.zipitwireless.com ...
