Gamepark Holdings  have today announced the successor to the GP2X Wiz, The Caanoo is a new powerful console to take over from the Wiz, heres a quick look at it:

"Create your games and share it with the world, this will all be made possible by Game Park  Holding's New Console - Caanoo.

With more RAM and a larger display, you can power up your creations. And with the added Vibration Motor and the G-sensor, you can add all those new dimensions to puzzle solving and combats.

The networking and sharing platform is still the main attraction of the console. Make use of the Wi-Fi connectivity and log on to the Internet, once you have access, you can enjoy your online game with anyone and everyone. The first online game for the Caanoo, "Blood Cross" is currently in development.

Besides logging into online games, you can grab any content you want, such as applications and stand-alone games, off the FunGP, an online application store.

The FunGP is not just a shop, it distributes Software Development Kits (SDK) and tutorials. The site will provide you with game development support and settle the sales remittance matters.

You can put your work on the site and earn money. If gaming is your dream, you can try your hand at it here. The site will be opened in August 2010, be sure to visit it.

The multimedia jukebox and the E-reader functions that exist in the Wiz are still available on the new console, so what you could do with the Caanoo's ancestors, you could do it with that Caanoo and even more!

The console is expected to come at the end of August, more information on it will be released in the next few weeks, so please stay tuned. Preorders are expected to start in June

That looks hot!

Plenty of grunt & seemingly excellent product and software support. An online app store too, hmm.

You know what will do it for me, if it's any good, they FINALLY put a joystick on a hand-held gaming device. I love my Neo Geo Pocket for it and cannot understand why other companies never took in on.

Specs look quite nice, but it really matters how much it will cost.

Yeah, but the buttons look definately better than the Wiz ones.  Grin
A bit like the A330... more Ram, same CPU. Well, Wifi and multiplayer sound nice indeed, but they promised that for the Wiz too.

wow - something that has everything that i want in a games console. i hope it isnt too pricy Grin.

EDIT: After reading more i have discovered that almost everybody hates it and its analogue stick. I can see that that is not useful for any games designed without analogue in mind. However modern consoles use analogue almost exclusively. It opens up a new range of games that can be ported and made. Ideally both a joystick and a dpad would be best Sad but i still think theres some promise for it as long as the scene grows large enough.

You'd think they would atleast go for a standard a/b/x/y layout!

It has always annoyed me that the Wiz has A/B on left/right and Y/X on top/bottom

The joystick looks small enough to be almost as comfortable as a d-pad. Contrast to the GP2X F100 joystick.

waste of time. the purpose of these handhelds is emulation and an analog stick is useless for this.
fine, the analog stick would be good for original content with analog in mind but GPH are a small development team and there won't be very many good games released by them that utilise it.

add to that the fact that the hardware is identical to the wiz (with the exception of RAM, this has 128MB whereas the wiz had 64MB) but the price will be significantly higher and it's pretty clear that GPH have really fucked it up this time. craigix has already said he won't even bother stocking it since GPH didnt even ask any of them for their opinions before finalising the design. this is just another nail in the gph coffin, pretty sad really.

The analog stick doesn't really bother me, since if it is a decent one and given its size, it probably wouldn't be too hard to control various emulated games.  And maybe they will change the X,Y,B,A layout before launch.  The other aditions seem nice (Wi-fi, vibration and G-sensor), but we'll have to see if they are actually used.  And, of course, if the additions of said features has added an extra $100 to the price.  Only real turn-off for me is seemingly no TV-out or extra controller support, for making it a console you can play with friends.

Over on Engadget, more information - http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/12/gameparks-gp2x-caanoo-handheld-hits-this-august-picks-up-where/

From the article:

Quote
While we're not sure just how we missed it, it seems GamePark was at E3 2010 in force, with a brand-new Linux gaming portable called the Caanoo. Though it's got the same 533MHz ARM9 processor as its wizardly predecessor, GamePark's doubled the memory to 128MB, and added a dedicated 3D GPU to power the larger 3.5-inch touchscreen. Throwback Sega-like buttons and a joystick take the place of those touchy D-pads, and there's new accelerometer and vibration functions for a modicum of enhanced control. When you're not loading open-source games, the system supports the usual array of photos and music as well as DivX, XviD and MPEG4 videos, and the company claims an official SDK and app store are on the way if you want to roll additional software yourself. Shame you'll have to use a WiFi dongle to download anything. The company expects to ship August 15 for $150 to importers like Play-Asia, making it viable competition for the lumbering Pandora. Find videos of the Caanoo in action after the break, and more at GamePark's official Facebook page.

I fully concur!

For the features and grunt that it has, and speculated price point, damn hard to knock it back.

Unlike the Dingoo, at least it's coming from a company who seem to be moving forward and who have continually been releasing new consoles & software, that's a very good sign.

how is this a move forward? it's the same as the wiz hardware wise but with crappy analog stick and a worse quality screen. ok so it has 128MB of ram instead of 64 but that aint gona make an awful lot of difference.

the engadget article is wrong about the 3d acceleration, that was present on the wiz too.
