Sony Ericsson: Xperia Play
« on: January 19, 2012, 03:57:53 pm »
I see discussions about the Xperia play derailing some threads so I'm starting a new topic to discuss the Sony Ericsson: Xperia Play

- CPU: Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon (1GHz scorpion)
- GPU: Adreno 205
- Android OS, v2.3.4
- Li-Ion 1500 mAh battery (5 hours)
- accelerometer
- proximity sensor
- compass
- GPS
- 5 MP camera (720p video)
- wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n
- headphone jack
- stereo speakers
- microsd slot (8GB included)
- 4.0in (~245 ppi pixel density) capacitive touch screen
- NAND: 1GB
- RAM: 512MB
- 175g
- 854 x 480
- 119.0 x 62.0 x 16.0 mm
- MP4/H.263/H.264/WMV player
- MP3/eAAC+/WMA/WAV player

here's a video I made a while back shows off most of the emulators I listed below
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igGldO5gAOw

you can get an extended battery for the play. It's thicker but that actually makes the device much more comfortable. 3600mah basically more than doubles your battery life. It's not uncommon to get 12 hours of actual use with this battery. I link to the manufacturer but there are many other cheaper options out there via ebay but this is just for visual and point of reference.

FAQ

1) How easy is the device and how stable does it overclock

A) overclocking requires root access, bad esn versions of the xperia play are cdma based, cdma versions (R800X) don't have unlockable bootloader, you have to actually root or jailbreak your play http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765

if you have a international verison (R800i) you can unlock the bootloader without jailbreaking it (http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com/instructions ) either path you must choose I would just reccomend against it, overclocking isn't really needed for the emulators to play fluidly and it only stable overclock to about 1.2-1.5ghz anyway, theres kernels that allow for o/c'ing of up to 1.9ghz but I don't find them stable... 1ghz is fine for just about everything you do, plus you really drain the battery.

2) Can you configure and use the  Analog Touch Pads for N64 and PSX Emulation as i read that the N64 you cant?

A) N64oid (N64 emulator) and fpse (psx emulator) do not use the touch pad but offer the "best of" in each catagory of emulator. Mupen64Plus ( https://market.android.com/details?id=paulscode.android.mupen64plus.xperiaplay ) allows for touch pad integration but offers less compatibility and speed.

3) Can you configure the buttons for most other emulators like you can with the Dingoo A320

A) the other emulators for most common systems I reccomend these emulators ( https://slideme.org/user/3168/applications/3168 ) most are free except n64oid. all of those listed I can confirm allow custom mapping with the xperia play hardware buttons.

4) How would you rate the following Emulators for the device out of 10 (10 being Perfect, 5 being Average).

A)

http://slideme.org/application/gensoid (Sega MD 10)
http://slideme.org/application/gearoid (Sega MS/GG 10)
http://slideme.org/application/nesoid (NES 10)
http://slideme.org/application/snesoid (SNES 10)
http://slideme.org/application/gameboid (GBA 10)

Arcade especially CPS2 and Neo Geo

I can't compare some of these to original hardware because I either never played or do not own

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.seleuco.mame4all (mame unknown)
https://market.android.com/details?id=fr.mydedibox.neodroid (neogeo unknown)
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.jrioni.cps2hd (cps2 unknown)

And finally PSX and N64

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.emulator.fpse (PSX 8-9)
http://slideme.org/application/n64oid (N64 8-9)
https://market.android.com/details?id=paulscode.android.mupen64plus.xperiaplay (N64 6-7)

5) Whats the device like for playing Video files as a potable media player.

A) plays most videos stock, additional codec available with highly recommended 3rd party app mobo player which plays basically everything like vlc player for pc. I'm not much of a movie watcher on handheld so I couldn't tell ya specifics. Netflix and hulu streaming is also available if you have those paid services.

Thanks for posting this. Gonna look into getting the N64, CPS2, and Neo Geo emulators. Are there any emulators made specifically for CPS1? Also, do any emulators run Sega CD games?

So far I have loaded N64oid, nes.emu, md.emu, and snesoid. All are working really well. I plan to get mame4droid and tiger arcade set. Not sure if there are better options available for CPS1, CPS2, or Neo Geo.

Cheers SNESFAN for answering my questions.

I guess overtime a improved Mupen or a N64noid with ability to use Analog Touch pads could apear, as i see Andriod phones becoming popular devices for Emulators.

Its nice to see that the Xperia Play Games and other Andriod games are also very well priced, with many also free or peanuts (under $2 each).

Seems this system is the one to answer my Homebrew device Prayers... untill the PS Vita is hacked that is  ;) But the things not out yet and that could take some time.

So the Xperia Play will surely pacify untill Christmass....

So now its just a case of saving up to get ?200 or get one from my Catalogue for ?240 which i can spread over 52 weeks intrest free.

Once again SNESFAN thanks very much ;)

md.emu in the android market I think is based off picodrive FOSS and it runs sega cd games

tigerarcade (have to find source) does cps1, cps2, neogeo + mame games

haven't used either yet so I can't vouch for performance and like I mentioned above no point of reference for actual hardware but they do exist.

EDIT: if you must unlock your R800X bootloader here is a method that will work but will void your warranty 100% but has been confirmed to work

*warning* not recommended *warning*

Having issues with a dim screen? Ok, to anyone picking up a bad esn xperia play, your software is gonna be old. This means your phone is going to have the annoying tendency to automatically dim the screen depending on the lighting conditions in the area you are using it in. If it's running anything before 2.3.3, there will be no option to disable the auto brightness controls. This will make the screen flicker and change brightness on it's own.

Make sure you update to at least 2.3.3 to enable the option to shut off auto brightness. If you have a Verizon xperia play you won't be able to use Sony's PC Companion software to do the update. Instead download Sony Ericsson Update Service (SEUS) and follow the instructions. Once done, the phone will take a longer time to boot up, but only for the first time after the update. Your screen will now be extremely bright and clear. I was amazed by the difference it made and figured I'd post this for anyone finding it annoying.

yesterday i got some time for toying around with a galaxy s (which internally is very similar to the xperia play i think) and i must add that both atari800 and prboom run quite satisfactorily in it, despite being slightly underwhelmed with the prboom port

unfortunately, with dosbox the whole thing is hit-or-miss. i read on the vogons forums that the practical maximum speed achievable with andosbox (a paid app btw) is 8500 cycles for vga games and 10000 cycles for svga, not enough for many of the most "modern" of dos programs

i wanted to relive terminal velocity GOD DAMMIT  :'(

Hey guys,

I am really loving my Xperia Play, the emulators work great, controls work great, and the android games are fun. I have had one issue come up, hopefully someone has an idea what the problem is. The analogue touch pads stopped working, so I reinstalled the latest update and they worked fine again. But I found that when I shutdown the phone and turn it back on, they stop working, so I have to install the update anytime I shut it down to get them to work again. I tried factory reset, didn't help. Its not really a huge deal, but would like to fix if I can.

Anyone have any ideas?

It should receive an Ice Cream Sandwitch update soon, perhaps it will fix your problems (that I never experienced myself).

That is what I was thinking as well, maybe the next update will correct the problem. Just a weird problem, it only started 2 days ago, never had any problems before.

I guess there was nothing wrong with my analogue pads at all. I really had not used them much before, but I see why they were not working. I was sliding open my xperia play before powering it on, and the analogue pads don't turn on until you slide it open. I guess you have to slide it open after it is powered on to activate the analogue pads. Either that or slide it closed and open again once it is already powered on. Either way, I feel a bit silly, but glad there is no problems with it.

By the way, I downloaded Virtua Tennis Challenge yesterday, great game if anyone likes tennis games.

Sony just dropped the an offial ICS beta rom for R800i users with unlocked bootladers
http://developer.sonymobile.com/wp/2012/03/29/ics-beta-rom-now-available-for-unlocked-xperia-play-smartphones-download/

there is some good news and some bad news...

bad... if you are a verizon user (r800x) there is no official update out for you as your bootloaders aren't stock unlockable.

good... if you know what you're doing you can flash the patched/modified official update from XDA
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1571658

more good... as of the update N64oid now has touchpad support! it really works and is full analog!

more bad... the touchpads are reversed meaning up = down, down = up for both pads, too confusing for me to make the switch in my head so it's basically unusable.... if you can get around that then you should be fine.

even more bad... yongzh appears to have abandoned the N64oid project so we are stuck with this or untill there is a patch for the rom that reverses the touchpad outputs so that one emulator can take advantage of it... or if someone were to somehow patch n64oid but it shouldn't be possible because it's a paid closed source app =/ - fixed 4/10/12

you can follow the development from the official xda thread started by a developer from sony here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1571463

Update, Yongzh has updated N64oid to version v2.7
Quote
changelog

- Updated to Mupen64plus-1.99.5 (mainly fixed some graphics)
- Fixed touchpad on Xperia Play ICS.
I can confirm the touchpads now work correctly with the offical ICS BETA, where they were reversed before, they are no longer reversed.

Gingerbread 2.3.x based roms are still a no-go due to sony's proprietary framework hack to get them to work. If you want more information about this let me know and I'll explain it further.

You did update to the ICS BETA?
How great does it run? Would you advice me to update too?

I did, I was able to get it to run, but it's a pretty convoluted process to get everything running correctly. It does run almost as well as stock gingerbread, some slow downs, havn't benchmarked it yet, but it feels faster in some areas and slower in others... it's a beta

given you have a unlocked bootloader, a summary of what I had to do

-flash the boot, system, userdata images via fastboot
-flash a custom boot image with a custom recovery built in (fastboot booting didn't work for me, had to flash)
-install latest ICS google bits (market, gmail, gtalk etc)
-install wifi modules
-modify build.prop to support wifi
-reflash stock boot image due to custom boot only being quite hacky and not getting as good performance due to it being based off another device

now like I said it's quite a pain in the ass to get it functional, but it works.

If you aren't much of a tinker'er then I would just wait for the offiical ICS OTA or wait untill a version comes out on wotan server and flash it that way.

I'd say wait for official- I've tested ICS beta on Arc S and it is not ready for daily use (ram & power managament require some serious work)
