Raspberry Pi is out
10basetom:
Now that the Raspberry Pi is finally out, I wonder how long it will take for some entrepreneur hacker to turn it into a portable gaming rig and sell it for $100 a pop. The Model A kit is $25 (the $35 Model B kit comes with an Ethernet port and 2 USB ports, which are not required for a portable gaming device IMHO). Specs:
* Broadcom BCM2835 700MHz ARM1176JZFS processor with FPU and Videocore 4 GPU
* GPU provides Open GL ES 2.0, hardware-accelerated OpenVG, and 1080p30 H.264 high-profile decode
* GPU is capable of 1Gpixel/s, 1.5Gtexel/s or 24GFLOPs with texture filtering and DMA infrastructure
* 256MB RAM
* Boots from SD card, running the Fedora version of Linux
* 10/100 BaseT Ethernet socket (Model B only)
* HDMI socket
* USB 2.0 socket (Model B includes 2)
* RCA video socket
* SD card socket
* Powered from microUSB socket
* 3.5mm audio out jack
* Header footprint for camera connection
* Size: 85.6 x 53.98 x 17mm

What would you call a handheld though.... we got the Apple IPhone IPad etc....
If its touch screen how about Raspberry Ripple ;)
razumikhin:
The RPi isn't really designed to be portable -- the power consumption is likely too high to build it into something that's going to run off batteries for any length of time.
pcercuei:
The R-Pi can be powered from USB, which does deliver 500mA 5V. That's 2,5W. Indeed, it's a bit high for a handheld device. But its power consumption is likely lower. Have you found some official numbers?
indask8:
It's not really out, it's just in pre-order, and most people (including me) wont have it before june.
But it's indeed a very interesting board for diy projects.
But For 100$ to make it a portable console, it wont really be interesting (except for the fun of making one yourself), since there are many other console already out with more powerful chip (A10, 8726-M), more ram, more memory, and cheaper.
