New opensource console announced---The RG
« on: April 03, 2011, 04:31:26 am »
RG or readygo

A gaming console based on android.
It is on prototype stage.
It is said to have a 1ghz cpu, 1gb memory, 8gb build-in flash memory
5 inch capacitive touch screen, 6-axis gravitational sensor, HDMI out put
2 web camera, one in front, one behind.
also has 2 analog sticks.

that is everything announced so far.

I think  if this isn't too expensive and the build quality is decent, it may be a real killer to pandora, caanoo, the MU, the up-coming dingoo a380, gemei a380.

Looks good.

Don't count on it being inexpensive though.

Cool to see it has an analogue pad, pity about the other directional buttons though, when will people learn that it's d-pad or nothing.

I think so dude.
5 inch capacitive screen along cost furtune.

I guess this is a non-fair competition.
Handheld consoles in China used to be cheap Mp4s.
But now, they seem to reallize that giving d-pad and all the buttons to a tablet will produce a real killer machine.
I guess caanoo and pandora will suffer a bit, as console like this will continue to pop out.

But to us, it is a good news, we don't need to stand the ridiculous expensive pandora and the horribly designed caanoo just to get a more powerful console than dingoo and wiz.

I supposed to type fortune, sorry.
I think, this may be a good start as tablet pc companies enter the handheld console market.
Those damned mp4 companies finally will get what they deserved, a kick in the butts.

I guess the levels of handheld emulators would looks like this:

lvl1: really cheap and crappy handheld mp4(mp5) players
they work, but god-awfully.
sold about 30-60 bucks

lvl2: gaming gozillas, psp, ds, apple stuff
they either not portable, or not easy to use

lvl3:handheld consoles
dingoo a320, jxd3000, letcool, wiz, gp2x, caanoo, letcool
those are the ones you're looking for
cost anywhere between 70 to 140 bucks

lvl5:handheld pcs:
pandora, mbook m1 etc.
those are too expensive, and not easy to get your hand on.
cost about 500 bucks

we can see there is a huge gap between lvl3 and lvl5, there suppose to have lvl4 stuffs.
lvl4 handheld suppose to be more powerful than lvl3 handhelds, and less expensive than those handheld pcs.
I guess a tablet with buttons fits in this category perfectly.

perhaps, this RG opens up a new door for games. This mighty category of tablet pc with buttons may crush every other handhelds, with their nice performance, good build quality, and a just-right price.

I guess, this is very likely to happen.

You forgot to mention WiBrain B1 though with its price it probably qualifies as level 6 ;)

I'm somewhat sceptical towards Android. Sure it works and not half bad at it, but something tells me that its apps do not utilize the CPU to the point they could with different OS.

As for the RG, it looks really cool, but I wonder if there will be any GPU. GPU helps a lot, even a crappy one (like those integrated on some CPUs). It also makes developing 3D games/apps much easier (and fun). Also not all versions of Andriod work equally well. If one ends up with a old and buggy Android version because the Chinese were too lazy to make a better one work and\or because the CPU is incompatible with other versions. A WiFi would be nice...

That said I'm looking forward to what the device will have to offer (it kind of looks like mix of PMP and Tablet).

P.S. I wonder what hardware is required for NDS emulation, though the only NDS emulator with reasonable speed is close sourced (and probably makes good use x86 architecture) while other are quite unusable (they had some progress in the compatibility department, but lack in speed).

oh, Poligrafowicz, thanks for that.
just looked around for the WiBrain B1, this damned beast did cost fortune.
Wonder if it runs linux, I hate win xp.

The reason I find this news really apealing is that, seems tablet pc companies in China are starting to join competition with handheld companies.
I guess the smart phone, and tablet pc markets are over saturated.
This price gap will surely attract lots of them to join the party, which means better product and lower price.

Thanks god to free market.

The RG don't seem to have a dedicated graphic card.
It is still the early stage of gaming-tablet-with-buttons, guess they will eventually figure this out.

I think the big problem with those tablets made in China is that android is their only OS.
Haven't seen any linux ones recently.

Hmmm, KISS is clearly an alien concept in China.

As far as I know it does. It was even sold with linux for a slightly lower price (and for some weird reason without Blue Tooth). At start it had a VIA CPU with integrated GPU, later on they made a new version with Intel Atom and Intel GMA (950?). The later model named I1 and it was quite powerful (for an UMPC) back in the day. One can safely assume it can run a vast number of emulator. I always wanted to buy one, but the price prevented me from doing so. Then I was turning towards GP2x Wiz, Pandora and A320, but in the end I bought a MSI Wind U100. I don't regret doing so, because I had to do some coding on the go in VS2k8 and those handhelds would not let me do that. On top of that the netbook runs all the games (and even more) I would run on the handhelds with ease. Well, now I also have the A320.

I think the big problem with those tablets made in China is that android is their only OS.

Its good to have the amount of software available for Android, but I would too like to see a real linux based tablet (or rather a real linux working on this device).

And to my knowledge Android runs on top of a linux kernel. I dont know much about android but I think its probably something like a windowmanager + java api.

It runs a little deeper than that, there are quite a few modifications. It doesn't use X, it uses it's own graphics system based on java, not certain what other changes there are but it's not just a trivial system running on a clean linux kernel unfortunately.

The right stick does not seem very practical. I fear it will conflict with the buttons...

Why the dingoo A380 should be vaporware? It's already on the stores...
