Nexus 7 or Asus EeePC?

Hi,

It's my birthday in a few weeks and I have the wife stumped as what to buy me.

I bought a cheapo android tablet about 2 months back and it works for most basic tasks with overclocking but it's just not powerful enough to run mame at a decent speed unless I run really ancient roms.

I thought about getting a Nexus 7 8gb tablet but I am disappointed with the lack of SD storage.  I ideally want XBMC running on it but as it's in it's development stages it's not fully implemented hardware acceleration due to having to request data from the various chip manufacturers. 

I realise that Android is the now and perhaps I should take the plunge and go for a Nexus but does anyone have any other thoughts on alternatives such as EeePC?

My main wants are a fast operating system capable of playing mame/N64 at a good speed, good battery life and HD display.  Perhaps a fancy quad core laptop is what I am after but I doubt my Mrs will stretch to that!

Any suggestions would be welcome.

I have a nexus 7 and love it. It does not have tv out though which is a bummer since emulation on the device is excellent. I did a video of it on my channel. As for internal storage. If you root the device and install a custom rom you can use a otg cable to allow for extra storage space, joysticks and so on. I have a root tutorial on my channel as well ;) XBMC runs on it as well. Just no acceleration as you mentioned before.  That will come soon though. Google is great about letting us play with devices they have put out. Which EeePC are you thinking about. I just recently root a tf2 I liked the device but it was a little too big for my liking

Thanks qbertaddict.  It looks like the Nexus is really fast but no TV out is a bummer.  Rooting sounds good as I have a 16gb flash drive I can use via OTG.  Hows the battery life for gaming?

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101 - I had a look at this and it looks quite good.  I think you can upgrade it to ICS. 
ASUS Seashell Eee PC 1015PEM - Cheaper but a bit more bulky. Can it handle Mame? Battery states 11 hours use but I doubt it will really last that long.  Also do you think puppy arcade would run well on this?

Any help would be appreciated.

I had the 1015PEM for about a year and a half. It's a really nice netbook but the onboard Intel graphics lets it down. I didn't try MAME but the few N64 titles I tried ran OK with some tweaking.

Unfortunately mine developed a problem with the LCD after about 18 months and I got rid of it. It wasn't that the ribbon cable had come loose, I did check that... for some reason it just started to flicker randomly.

The battery life is great. I usually got about 6-8 hours out of it depending on what I was doing.
