Looking for a good portable emulator machine
« on: November 26, 2015, 08:53:42 am »
I'm on the run for a portable emulator machine but can't decide which one suits my needs.
I'm looking for good, NES, SNES, MegaDrive, Master System, GameGear emulation.
If PS1, N64 and DreamCast can be done that's a plus. But mostly I will be playing the first noted ones.

Can you give me some advice? What would be my best bet?

GPD XD, It's portable, pocketable even as it has a clamshell design like the NDS, its the same size and form factor as the New 3DS XL, includes dual analog sticks, 4 shoulder buttons and even L3 and R3 buttons. A lot of happy customers, myself included and can run all those emulators pretty well with a few problems Dreamcast-side in my opinion.

You can see a lot of chat about this console, its pros and cons and other GPD devices here -  http://boards.dingoonity.org/gpd-devices/

Of course being a Chinese console, it has its problems too, some people have issues with the setting of the buttons, some say its too mushy but I like it, so its all down to personal opinion there. Some actual issues such as the CPU wuring while the device is on was also present but I believe a firmware update fixed this.

They are good with community support to, firmware updates come out pretty often.
Turn off your Android games console when you are finished with it!

Thanks for the reply Lax.
I was looking into a XD as well.
Though I read/heard the d-pad is a little small. I do have fairly large hands and fingers. So a small d-pad would be a downside.
Do you share that opinion?

I didn't find the XD dpad a problem at all and I'm 6'6" with big clumsy hands, it's accurate and easy to use. I think the complaints were more of a subjective thing than an actual fault with the device, the people who were negative about it just have a different preference I think which is fine, everyone has different ideas about good dpads!

I think for the price it's hard to beat, especially if you just use emulators and can make do with the 16gb version.

Sounds good! Thanks.

The device do look very nice.
What is the best place to get it? I'm in The Netherland (Europe).

Aliexpress has the 16GB version for 148 dollar.
But I don't have any experience with Aliexpress.

Thanks Web8bits.

Geekbuying has the 16 and 32GB on sale.
16GB = 154 euro
32GB = 173 euro

I can get 5% discount with Geekbuying.

So for the 32GB version I'll pay 165 euro with Free Shipping. Also Spain Warehouse.

Geekbuying have a bad reputation on here at the moment as their customer support is pretty bad, if you can get one from their warehouse in your country you would have a better experience with them I think.

I bought mine from the GPD store on AliExpress and had to return it due to a fault, refund has supposedly gone through today but they also promised to cover return postage which so far hasn't happened. Currently I wouldn't recommend them based on this, if they do refund the return postage then I will update this though.
