R4i/DS Thread
« on: February 11, 2013, 10:57:17 pm »
So i got an R4i Dual Core (white) flashcard for all DS's.
It has the latest fimware and i've got all of the emulators for the systems i want to play off of it...
NES/Famicom, GB/GBC, SNES, SMS/GG, Genesis/MD, Colecovision, Commodore 64, Atari:800/5200/2600/7800, MAME, ZX-Spectrum, even the pain in the ass NeoGeo emu...
All except the Turbografx-16 emu, "Nitrografx".

It will start up, let me select a game to load, then just get stuck on the blue, "press L+R or touch the screen for options" screen.
I've messed with it on and off for a couple of days, searched everywhere on the net and nothing.
I'm pretty good at troubleshooting but this is killing me.

Does anyone have "Nitrografx" up and fully running on an R4i Dual Core (white)?
(Note: it works fine on r4i-sdhc-3ds and other cards, but this one has different setup requirements.)

[Edit: There are at least 2 different white Dual Core cards. One says "NEW" on the label, the other says "2013". they use different FW.]

I've given up the ghost on the Nitrografx thing.
Aparently you'll need an alternate emulator, problem is, there is no alternative for Nitrografx. :S

But, i have gotten the PC's DOOM and Quake up and running on the DS.
That's pretty kick-ass.

[Edit: I just figured out the problem is with the firmware for the "new" label version, wich at the moment is inferior to the "2013" label on r4i-sdhc-dual core (white).
A couple of emu/homebrews just don't work or have issues with the "new" labeled one...]

Cricket...cricket... haha!

Quake on DS is killer, I really like the control setup for FPS games and played the hell outta that when I got my DS. I did get a bug on later levels (like right near the end) which kinda made me quit playing it.

Yeah, Quake rocks.
The only thing i need to figure out is how to get that badass, redbook audio soundtrack from Trent Reznor to work with it as well, if that's even possible...

That soundtrack was one of the main reasons i bought the game back in the 90's.
Cool thing about it is the redbook audio files being present on the disc enables it to be popped into a standard CD player and listened to.
Kind of like some of those older PSX games such as Destruction Dirby 2, Tomb Raider, Crime Killer, etc...
(another cool trick for those type of PSX games was to start the game and then pop in your own music CD for some gaming/custom soundtrack action...anyone else remember that...? Kicked ass!)

Yup, IIRC that was one of the advertised features of Ridge Racer Revolution (and an undocumented feature of the original Ridge Racer). My friend loved playing RR with James Bond music  :D

Just added the MineCraft DS homebrew (in addition to Doom 1, 2 and Quake).
Pretty sweet...

Sorry, this stuff's not new at all, but it is to me.
Surely i can't be the only one who missed out on all this great stuff...

I did exactly the same thing with my Wii, sat there under the TV for ages and one day I decided to letterbomb it and install Quake, Doom, some emulators and XBMC. What a difference it makes!

It's replaced the failing XBox 360 as the bog standard media player (we're SD in this house). Unfortunately mine is a later model which can't play DVDs (booooo Nintendo!) but apart from that it's brilliant. Gonna see about getting it to play import games soon - I have a strange urge to play Fishing Resort....

Interesting... :)
I wonder if the Wii U will have anything extra you can et out of it like that, more multimedia supprt, emulation and such...

Yeah, I actually wasn't even into DS's until fairly recently, perhaps within the last 2 years or so.
I used to be pretty keen on PSP, thinking the DS's were for kids. Was totally unaware of the great libarary of great games, the nice form factor/interface and tons of extra apps, particularly the DSi and 3DS, and then of course, the flashcards blow the "must have" factor through the roof for emulation (even with the few with big drawbacks), multimedia and rom support.

I look back ashamed. haha.

Better late then never though, to discover how truly wonderful a handheld (family) really is.
Although recently could'nt be a better time to discover all this, with some of the best flashcards hitting the streets these days.

I've been having problems with DSi shoulder button dysfunctionality.
(seems to have been a wide spread problem w/ DSL, DSi and even 3DS)
After some googling, i ran across an easy fix that actually works for the DSi.
The guy said to blow into the buttons, one at a time, as hard as you can or use compressed air.
I did the former, thinking maybe he was just joshing, but it worked!

The L and R buttons are working MUCH better now even just short of flawless.
Beats having to open it up again.
Strange and ineresting...

Yeah I was kinda hoping the WiiU and the tablet controller would be hackable, would be a really cool media centre. There's something about the Wii design that just sits nicely under the TV, plays all my Gamecube games too! You can get RetroArch on it now although it is limited and a lot of stuff I tried didn't work. If you own a Wii and haven't hacked it yet do it, it only takes a few minutes and is stupidly easy.

Regarding the whols "DS is for kids PSP is for adults" thing I think it's actually the other way around. DS is for everyone - it has kiddy games, puzzle games, horror games, crosswords, FPS.... Don't think there's ever been a console with such a variety of software on it before. In fact when I used to travel on public transport a lot I used to see loads of adults (20s - 60s) playing on their DS!

The PSP actually seems to be targeted more at teenage boys than any other demographic - the "adult" games are in fact just the usual cut down console ports which spotty teenagers seem to like so much. Take the God of War games for instance - totally targeted at teenage kids right down to the soft-core porn mini games yet they're supposed to be for adults.
I own a PSP and a shedload of games and think it's a pretty cr@p console tbh. Those loading times!  ::)

Yes, i was closed minded at the time, and erroneous in my assumptions.
This was like 7 years ago.
Ive since switched my views.
The PSP is pretty limited compared in scope and audience compared to the DS family of games.
Love the RPGs, Horror, the oh so easy jail broken potential that is so easily unlocked and the screen protecting form factor.

I love the way the DS's look so reminiscent of the old Game and Watch handhelds of the same basic form. Totally kick-ass, retro meets new tech vibe.

Thanks!

I thought the same thing after i did them up.
I'm gonna try some other color variations that will look more "game and watch" style, like the pics from the internet below...

You've made me want a DS Phat now!

Got rid of mine ages ago when I bought a DS Lite but I bet you can pick them up for next to nothing now.

Probably in Red, Orange or White if possible.
Not even sure if they came in orange or white, have to research it...
