sd card problems
« on: March 12, 2014, 01:18:01 pm »
I'm having problems with my sandisk 32 gig SD card being mounted on my s7800. I am using the same card that I had for my 5110 and a while back I ejected the card from the 5110 while it was still powered up and ended up having to reformat it as the device wasn't recognizing any files saved on it  ::)  I have pretty much exhausted all the available space on the disk (full 0.139 mame romset and such) and I do give the device a couple of minutes to find everything but now I am having to power down and up again 2 or 3 times before the 7800 will find the card. Have I done some damage to the card or is it a problem with the device?

Well did you try to backup all the files to your computer and use another SD Card and try? Since if it's old it may have been some dirt or stuff on the gold plating of the SD Card may have caused it hard to be read.

like was said try cleaning the cards contacts.. they could be dirty, even if they don't look it try it anyway you might have oil's from your skin on it or something.

use rubbing alcohol and a q-tip.

if that does not work use a USB card reader on your pc and see if it can read it.

if no then format it and try again.

fat32 is not a fault tolerant file system, in the future i don't recommend you take them out while the device is powered up.

I have come to the conclusion that I only have this problem after I have moved roms onto the sdcard from my pc while it is still in the 7800, or using the 7800 as a disk drive as you will.  As soon as I go through the "safely removing hardware prompts" etc and I go into my files - the 7800 will not find the sdcard requiring me to reset the device maybe 2 or 3 times until it finds it.

I have stopped using the pc to move files and just download roms directly to the device now.

you can use wifi to move your files easily.

get ES file explorer and you can access windows file sharing.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop

and/or

install CIFS modules and you can natively map shares to any directory on your device.
So you could actually stream large roms like playstation to your device over wifi.

OR use FTP service built into ES file explorer and access files via any browser

OR install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.funkyfresh.samba
which add's Samba/Windows file sharing to your device and you can access from your computer.

I've used the USB to move files before.. I never had a problem just make sure you eject from your host pc and THEN disable USB drives on android before disconnecting.
But wiif is faster/easier once you get a system in place you like.

Most likely the MFT is becoming corrupted (as a result of the NAND nearing the end of it's life) due to write cycles not being completed or closed properly.

I would simply switch the card. For the $20 it will ensure you keep you saved stuff.
