I bought the S601 based on the discussion here on this particular thread (honest) and after getting it, and seeing how LITTLE coverage it gets on the web outside of a couple of forums, I went ahead and started a website to change that.  Gaming on Batteries was started to showcase the great games that hand helds such as the S601 can run (and information on which ones to avoid for various issues, prominently the screen resolution).

At last check, GoB was closing in on 30k visitors a month (which is great considering how niche the system is).  We recently started coving other handhelds but traffic is unequivocally behind the S601 and other Android handhelds.

I think there is a market for stuff like the Yinlips systems but I think the price is holding back fans.  With the S5110 priced at $99.99, I think JXD is putting their sites on taking the top spot (and if they aren't careful, gutting their S601 sales).  It is just too good a system for the price.  Sure, it can't be overclocked at the moment but that will come as fans get behind it and modders get time to tinker with the system.

I don't really think fragmentation with Android consoles will harm anything, after all Android is fragmented anyway so it's kind of inevitable! The steady improvement of technology that constantly filters down to our price point is really encouraging IMO, it's amazing what we get for our money nowadays and it makes sense to get the most capable keenly priced device available at the time of purchase.
In any case, they all run similar Android roms and we are all using pretty much the same emulators so there's a good level of cohesion over lots of different consoles which can only be a good thing IMO.

It doesn't surprise me that these consoles are still almost unknown outside these forums and emulation circles as they aren't advertised to the mainstream public. However I do think they are in a prime position to get MUCH more popular, especially with such a well known and universal OS onboard.
I guess at the moment most people would rather play naff novelty touch games rather than the hundreds of amazing games at our disposal, or rather they don't even know just how many classics they are missing out on... Most people won't go digging to find their entertainment, they'd rather it was served up to them without having to put any effort in.
Handhelds:
JXD S7300b, Dingoo, DS Lite, GBA SP, PSP, HTC One X, HTC Dream.
Netbooks/Palmtops:
Acer 522 (4gb ram) Radeon 6310 - MSI Wind U230 (4gb ram and DTV card installed)
Psion Series 5 and 5mx, Psion Series 3 and Psion Siena

I agree. I think that fragmentation wont be a problem. I think it can be overcome if we can get working kernel source for all the amlogic based devices, and we can also make different versions of the same rom for different devices too :)

its still early days though, but we have amlogic kernel source, and the JXD developers sent me some driver code for the S601, so we'll see where we can take it from here. It looks like we won't get analog support on this device because of the way that the analog stick is wired up, but with the kernel source we might be able to prevent the button ghosting issues :) and i'm sure there are many other things which can be fixed too.

It depends a lot on whether the manufacturers are willing to give us their source

Also, JXD said that they will aim to get proper analog on their later dual core devices that they're planning :)

Well, I tried a OTG cable and didn't work for me, that's why I assume that is doesn't have OTG, but maybe is my cable, I don't know.

Then i guess it doesn't have OTG...

But if you want you can make some tests to see if something happens... e.g plug some device and see if anything appears in the kernel log using dmesg command.

You can also use this program to determine if it has or not...

When I tried OTG (probably about 100 pages ago in this thread lol; edit: only 82 pages ago), I never saw any events on dmesg or logcat when something was plugged in. (This was with a build from February)
I even tried hotwiring external +5v and ground connections (like is required for my motorola phone) to no avail.

Note that there are still some messages in dmesg indicating usb otg should be enabled.

There is another possibility... OTG is enable in the kernel (that is what config file and kernel messages indicates) but there are no drivers installed.

Maybe i should try to build the OTG drivers as modules and import them to see if that is the case...

Edit: Just check the configuration file from the device. AmLogic USB Host drivers are included...

It's also possible that the S601 do not power the USB with 5V....

That's the case with my Galaxy S.
If you have the required cables you can give a try to the scheam of the pictures attached here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1450298

I'll try it later.
