Just a question to those who own the console. Which firmware are you using/you prefer) ? The Android 2.3 with OC or the Android 4.0? Just to get an idea in case I decided to cook some rom for it...
I MUCH prefer the ICS(UI) fw, and I suspect that the ONLY reason that people are using the GB fw is for the hacked OC kernel...

Ok, I've spend my first hour with the S5110 and had a good chance to compare it with the S601.

First impression was much more positive than I expected. The package of the S5110 is nearly identical to that of the S601 but it contains a separate wallwart for charging, a USB cable and a cable to convert micro to mini USB. The device itself is about as thick as the S601 and a bit thinner than my PSP1000.

The good

The build quality is surprisingly good with no creaks and rattles and no "dead button feel". The 5110 was half charged so I could do some testing out of the box. Start up is fast. Much faster than any of my iOS devices. ICS looks quite nice on the 5 inch screen but doesn't add much more than it's older brother on the 601. The higher resolution really pays off.  Off course the screen isn't as good as the PSVita but the latter costs about 5 times as much. Sound is an upgrade to from the 601. Nice stereo speakers and crisp sound. I have to disinfect my house though because the only demo song on the device was the Back Street Boys :D

Response time is much better than the S601. The screen might be resistive but it really feels like something between capacitive and resistive. Angry Birds is fantastically playable with my fingers.  Everything feels much snappier, even compared to the 1Ghz Skeltonized 601.

I played Mario 64 which is about as fast as on the 1 Ghz 601. At the moment I only have the stock apps and emus. Streets of Rage 3 on the Genesis emu was okay, only the sound is a bit weird which is normal (same on the 601)

The bad

There is no Play store! I had the Play store right away on the 601 but can't seem to find it here.  Wifi didn't work at first because there is a switch that needs to be in the "on" position. At least the 5110 doesn't have that weird hardware "off" switch.

The weird

I switched the input from "Baidu" to "English". My wifi password contains numbers but the keyboard that pops up only showed letters! Only when I switched back to "Baidu" input could I use numbers.

I can't wait for Skelton's version to clean up this beast. If you need a donation mate, PM me your PayPal address.

Great write up Singa!  Thanks for the info as I wait for mine to arrive.

Does it come with a PS1 emu?

Singapura, to get root and market in ICS you can use this (I quote myself).

Also, if you want to try root and market in Android 4.0 try this update:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/69559458/s5110_Root.zip

Install it from recovery, apply:sdcard. It doesn't wipe anything, just adds google play and root.

Qbertaddcit made a video explaining the process.

It seems it works OK.

Big DOH! moment here. I downloaded the package and saved it on my SD card. I forgot however that there still was a freakin' S601 update on there. Off course the update used that one so I'm currently re-flashing. Funny thing is that the S601 Skelton ROM does work on the 5110. The screen is messed up though which is probably a driver issue.

No but it should be no problem to get one if you root and install the Play store.

You forgot to mention the utter crap WiFi signal strength.  Or is yours better than mine?

My rom boots in the s5110? Wow, what a compatible rom I made! haha (joking). it's not so strange, since they share the same meson 3 board and kernel is quite similar. However, drivers will be different (screen, hdmi, sensors, etc...).

So far I had no issue with wifi. I'll test a bit more later though.

I'm back in business! the proper ICS update and the Play! Store installed smoothly. I notice a difference in speed though as all of my emus have stuttering sound. Fpse runs well but not as smooth as the 601 Skelton. I really hope that this thing can be overclocked because the screen is so much nicer.

The Android 4.0 kernel seems to be not very well built. As far as I know, JXD will release a new firmware correcting the spped issues among other things. Android 2.3 kernel seems to be overlocked well. Any case, I will do some research to see if something can be done, but not my priority, since I have some other projects at the moment. The strange thing is that you said it was smooth just out of the box, but it isn't after reflashing firmware?

Is setcpu working ok with the OCed GB kernels?  Any special files needed(profile)?

I'm in the process of flashing/root/market w/GB right now.

[EDIT]
Well market didn't go well for me, keep getting an error has occurred please try again later...
[/EDIT]

[EDIT2]
going to do a wipe of cache, media, and factory reset from recovery and try re-installing everything.

I've got another idea for another trick to try if I still get these -> clearing cache on either market or google.services.framework and data on the other and force stopping them... It's something that I had to do with other market hacks on chinese devices to get market running...

Cutterjohn, try this profile for setcpu. Put it in your sdcard. (extracting the rar)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/69559458/setcpu.rar

It has frequencies until 1 ghz, but edit it as you like it, depending on the speed you are using.

I haven't any WiFi problem with my console.  :o
