You can if you install twrp. Custom ROMs need twrp. You need to unlock bootloader to root install twrp.

I'm still looking for instruction on how to install TWRP. I've had little success with either the TWRP Manager or Fastboot (can't get the device to be recognized). Do I have to flash to the Nvidia stock ROM, root, and then flash to TWRP?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This is how we do it.

You would need a TWRP compiled for s912 to use it. As far as I know there isn't one. If you flash nvidia stock rom in your JXD you'll get bricked.

It seems the JXD S192 is back from the dead.  Does anyone know why the K1 chip is no longer present on the device?  Looks like this new one is running a Mali-T764.......

Because Nvidia stopped selling them chips, so they will use RK3288 like in GPD XD for example. But with less performance and worse firmware (I had a proto of the new RK model and was terrible)

It's disappointing, really, as I was rooting for JXD to return to the scene with a good product.  The asking price is uncalled for and I hope other retailers realize no one will be buying this weaker device at the cost of what it was when it had Nvidia's chip. Even with the upgraded 4 GB of memory.

Even when the tegra chip was expensive. Specially having a Shield tablet with better software/firmware cheaper. Just add an ipega 9023 and ready to go.
I personally wouldn't expect for JXD. In fact,  most companies that made android gaming devices are moving to windows devices, so I wouldn't hope something big in a near future.

Is JXD still around?   By that I mean they got a huge blow with the S192 after Nvidia pulled supply of the Tegra K1.  This musty have hurt them financially.   Since then I haven't heard a thing from JXD.

Supposedly they were going to release the s192 with rk3288, but who knows... I wouldn't be surprised if they dissappear

Yeah I heard that, but that was ages ago now (9 months ago actually), and not a peep.  I can't imagine that it will eventuate now.  There were too many issues with that anyway.  Not many would pay for an old tech RK3288 gaming tablet now. Not at anywhere near the price they would hav to charge.  Plus it would have been more cost for JXD to develop the new rk3288 pcb.  ie it would be more money they probably don't have, on developing something that probably wouldn't sell well at all and incur more of a loss

I agree, and probably will be a failure if they release it. So wouldn't be a surprise that they don't release anything.
