Hailrazer's S7300 joystick mod
« on: April 21, 2013, 08:57:20 pm »
BEFORE:

AFTER:

Love my S7300 especially with a custom rom.

Hate the 3DS type Sliders.  Here's the sliders that irritate me so bad.

I am an analog joystick type of guy.  You just get much better control with joysticks. Try tiptoeing with Mario along a beam and you'll see what I mean. With the 3DS type sliders it is nearly impossible because of the deadzones and lack of precision. With analog sticks it is much easier and a lot more precise.

So I found some small joysticks that fit and put them in.   (Thanks Beta)

The analog sticks come from an Android Bluetooth controller. They can be bought on Amazon.com for anywhere from $12-$20

And here is what it looks like once removed from the controller:

So what you have to do is dis-assemble your S7300. It'snot that hard and there are guides to do it on the Dingoonity Forums.

Next you will need to remove the 3DS type sliders. :

You can use de-solder braid or a de-solder pump and de-solder the Sliders. Then you will have to remove the screws in the boards that the Sliders are soldered to. You can then lift up the boards a little and remove the whole slider. Go ahead and screw the boards back down as the rest of the joystick install can be done with them screwed down.

Now you need to trim the Analog joystick pcb a little. Here is where it needs to be trimmed :

Now what you want to do is set the joystick in the hole and put a bit of hot glue or tape on it until you get it centered in the hole. The back of the pcb will be exactly level with the pcb board that is in the JXD.  This is the way to put them in :

Once you get it centered you will need to use a small amount of epoxy or hot glue on all 4 corners. I suggest epoxy but use what you are comfortable with. The epoxy I use is a simple clear 30 second set epoxy from Harbor freight :
http://www.harborfreight.com/1-oz-instant-setting-super-adhesive-epoxy-96034.html

Let it set up until the joystick is mounted solidly.

Now you will need to wire them. Here is the way to wire them:

Here's what mine look like wired and epoxied in.

Also this was about the 5th time I had re-wired and soldered mine, it was getting late and I was tired of the project so my solder job was less than perfect.   :o

And here is what the finished product looks like.

I have been playing N64 , PS1 and Android games like GunBrothers for the past few hours and there is no comparison. These analog joysticks are by far better and more accurate than the junky 3DS type Sliders.

If you have the skill, give this mod a try, you won't regret it.  :)

Looks hella nice! I suck at soldering and I'm too afraid to destroy my device, else I would've done this too!

Oh my... this is a really good mod! Perfect find there with a matching voltage joystick small enough to fit inside the existing casing. Though I too am scared to do a mod such as this one without breaking something.

I posted the mod on Bac's site. I don't do work logs anymore.

And I usually keep all spare parts. :)

Great job Hailrazer!! Wow I'm impressed! Hey would you be willing to do this to mine if I paid for shipping, the materials, and compensated you for your time? Thanks in advance!

Hi,

wow, very great mod, I already thought for a mod like this, but I had not found correct sticks to fit.

So I ordered the same joysticks as you at Amazon France to do this mod.

Great job !

;)

Ps: what are the grey parts with a circle hole on your photos ?

That's what the S7300 looks like with the 3DS sliders removed.

Sorry, maybe my question was not clear (I'm French lol).

I'm talking about this grey part:

This part is not here:

I already opened my 7300 to resolder the joystick and I haven't seen the grey part with this big circle hole.

;)

When you de-solder and take out the joystick and it and lay the pcb back down on the front of the S7300 case, the gray part is the back of the case front showing through.

With the old joystick still in you don't see the case front through the hole because the old joystick has a black plastic circle covering the hole.

Ah ok thanks, I'll receive my two JS1 Joystick tomorrow, so I'll make your mod ;)

Looks great, how does it feel compared to a current-gen console?  I'm curious if you have more range than what it felt like with the slidders?  I have a modded PSP that I never use due to the slider, figured I'd try to overlook it w/the 7300 but I still despise the feel of it.

Hi hailrazer, I received my two sticks and I started the mod so I followed your diagram to cable my right stick first but your diagram is wrong.

In fact in your final installation you turned your stick at 90?, so in your initial diagram you need to invert the diagram wires to match with the new stick configuation (The UP/DOWN becomes LEFT/RIGHT etc.)

I exactly wired like your diagram and the Up is Left, the Down is Right etc.

The correct Diagram is (Right Stick diagram, same for Left Stick):

The new diagram is tested ok.

Look the error:

Your final installation is correct because you turned your stick at 90? :

In fact, whatever the position of the Stick, the wires need to be crossed.

Yea you're right. I forgot that when you rotate the axis 90% then the left/right up/down rotate. My bad. I'll change it to just be like I originally wired it.

First post has been edited to the correct wiring diagram.

Thanks NgXAlex and sorry for messing you up.
