Strange behavior while charging
« on: March 04, 2017, 02:51:43 pm »
Does anyone else notice any strange behavior while charging?  Specifically for me, I've given up on sleep mode because I've had a number of phantom wakes which just leaves the device idling with the fan on, letting it get hot in my bag.

So I've been shutting it down after using it but when I go to put it on the charger, it mysteriously boots the device and leaves it hanging at the splash screen.  When I go to get it hours later, I find it with the screen on at the splash screen and a visible mouse pointer in the center.  At this point, nothing can be done except a hard shutdown and reboot.  I suppose I could live with it but I just want to know why I can't charge with the device powered off.  Is something wrong with my unit or is everyone else dealing with this too.  Thanks in advance.

What version you've got? The newer one or the one before? Does fast charging work? If not something needs to changed in the BIOS settings, that may cure the strange behavior.

I'm honestly not sure how to tell what version I have.  I bought it 30ish days ago and they said it had an updated metal dome and better mouse firmware.  I never saw the original so I have no idea how to verify that.

Yes, fast charging was working for me.  I was able to disable the C5 state in the bios, which appears to have fixed my issue.  Now when I plug in, it boots for a second and immediately shuts down.  Is there anything negative to disabling C5 states?

You should have the one with the matt top cover look not the glossy one. The last I've heard to keep the C5 driver enabled, otherwise it may causes problems.

C5 != S5. S5 charging is different.

Higher power usage in sleep mode. Mine kept crashing even with C7 disabled and hibernate off while sleeping, so I finally re-enabled C7, set CsEnabled to 0, and turned hibernation back on. No problems since. It won't sleep anymore, but hibernate is pretty fast.

The problem is when you come back from hibernate state, there is a process that running in the background which uses between 15/30% of the cpu.

Funny, I just noticed that today. I will be seeing if I can figure out why it's happening, because I really want hibernate to work.

Sorry, I meant S5 charging, not C5.  When I disable that in the bios, it doesn't have the issue where it comes on when plugging it in with the lid closed.  But then I don't have the LED light when charging anymore.  I'm willing to leave S5 charging off, but I'm still not sure what it actually does.

I do have the latest version with the matte top.

S5 charging loads the fast charging driver. To try to fix your problem with charging disable both charging settings in the BIOS and save the BIOS settings. Go back in the BIOS and enable them again than save the settings. If all goes well it should load the fast charging driver after some time charging. It should show the battery charging screen for a little tme and than power off the screen.

Wow, that seems to have fixed it!  When I plug it in, it turns on for a few seconds with a red light and then ends up with a purple light and the screen/fan off.  No more hanging splash screen.  Thanks for the tip!

It's also possible to power on the GPD Win while it's charging. At least mine does boot to Windows when I push the power button while charging.
