Is there a plan to release a pro version: 8GB RAM, Full HD, ...?
« on: February 09, 2017, 02:23:15 am »
I read something about it long time ago and at the time I thought that it might be worth to just spend something more and have it a little bit more future proof, as it won't be upgradable. But I've not read anything else about it recently...

Do you guys know if there's version more powerful coming at some point in the future?

Probably not.  Also Full HD would be pretty bad for gaming as the GPD win struggles as it is at 720p.

extremely unlikely to be any updated version and as mentioned full HD resolution would make gaming even more horrible an honestly you cannot tell the difference between 720p an 1080p at 5.5" an smaller I own a original nexus 5 and oneplus X both with similar sized screens to the win an with my vision being 20/13 20/15 I cannot tell the difference at all. Hell the best way to improve gpu perfomance on the win is to LOWER the resolution to 960x544!

I was thinking more about not gaming tasks. The RAM to be abke to multitask better rather than maybe just having a single program opened and the FHD to help visualize larger spreadsheets without so much scrolling around. I know that the screen is small but to see numbers in cells it'd be useful. I've  got a 7" windows tablet with low resolution as well and it is a pain to work with spreadsheets just for that... :(

I just found out something similar to what I was thinking. Anyone has heard anything about the progress of this other device?

It's fake and has been cancelled.

It seems some users are still thinking it'd be created at some point in that forum. Although the tech specs look pretty good, but the analog sticks by the edge of the screen... hmmm, even if it becomes a reality it might be not too user friendly at best!

There's a pretty conclusive analysis kicking around that links the PGS to russian gangsters. It's so fake that it's not even worth thinking about.

A GPD Win Pro on the other hand... eeeh... I'd be interested to see it but if you want to make the most of it then a core-M CPU would be best and suddenly we're looking at doubling the price. A 1080p display without a CPU change would give worse performance and 8GB RAM would be solving problems that have other blockers on the Win such as productivity (where a better keyboard is more important) and running high end games (where the integrated graphics aren't enough).

When I found out about the campaign for the PGS I was so frustrated because I had always wanted a device of that kind, but it was so obviously fake / impossible it wasn't funny.

Then I came across the Win that did it for realz and clicked the Buy button as fast as I could.

No point at all in a 1080p display, way too small.

Not just the size.

A 1080p screen is useless as most moder  games don't even run on 720p.

Even if a game performs well at 1080p, it would still be a huge waste of battery (since it's about 2x the GPU load compared to 720p)

Obviously a 1080p screen would be useless for games, but it likely wouldn't reduce performance either as long as you use the same lower resolutions as now with the 720p screen...

The point was for other uses, but for that it's useless too since the interface would be so tiny you'd have to use scaling to ring back things to manageable sizes and thus nullify the benefits.

Aren't they planning on releasing some sort of GPD Win MAX? I don't think they've said anything in particular about it though.

They do release the GPD Pocket, but it's not gaming orientated and has almost the same Chipset.

That was my point of view regarding its usage. ie, I wouldn't think about gaming in 1080p, but in my case, I would find it really useful to deal with large spreadsheets. In some of them, I don't even need to read the values (numbers) but I need to see if they're populated or not, so a 1080p would fix that problem and I wouldn't mind paying higher for that feature only. But that's being niche in an already niche product, so not sure if that would ever happen.

For now, I was 95% about to buy one, but this issue with the Full HD and just 4GB RAM, I think I'm going to wait 6m/1y and see if there's something else in the market with those settings. I always end up buying 'almost' what I need and at the end I don't use it as one key feature is missing...

We will see if GPD or a competitor releases something similar. For now, I just need to carry a larger tablet around...

and just 4GB RAM

I had a look at the pagefile size Windows decided to set on my Win and it's only 256MB... which means in the 5 weeks I've had it I never actually needed all 4GB of RAM. That's with gaming, dev/compiling, web browsing, and even running a linux VM while doing the other stuff etc... i.e. more would be useless in most realistic cases on a device of this form factor.
