Well they are making a cost reduced / power optimized HBM variant at some point in the future...so maybe once that exists we'll see HBM in this area. A single stack of HBM would annihilate LPDDR even if you had to way underclock it to reduce power consumption (which is one of the goals of HBM anyway much lower power per bit transfered.)

Looks like some new Mobile AMD chips coming later this year

https://liliputing.com/2017/05/amd-ryzen-mobile-chips-raven-ridge-coming-later-year.html

Definitely looking forward to this.

It might be just marketing talk, but if they really reduced the power consumption by 50% we could get a *really* strong chip at just 5-7W.

Probably similar to the 7y30 honestly... Intels GPUs may not be great but they are very power efficient. I was hoping AMD would make an APU with a single stack of HBM as it's main memory but that isn't happening apparently.

Yea the big take away here would be if we could get HBM2 memory as *system ram* as well.  That would be insane.  Only problem I can see is that HBM takes more power than LPDDR ram
Just barely, especially for the bandwidth per watt. HBM operates at 1.3v and lpddr4 does so at 1.2v...

Sounds good.

Even underclocked hbm would be much faster.

This is the first time to contact the stakeholders of GPD company, so that GPD WIN authorized dealer DentOnlineShop (dent) representative : Mr. Iwamoto, GPD Company (SHENZHEN GPD TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD.) We have asked various questions about products of our company and original products of our company. Please enjoy it as a column article.

The second generation of GPD WIN (hereinafter, GPD WIN 2 as tentative name) has already been planned.
Unfortunately Atom is finished in this generation, so we plan to have a Core M processor as a new Soc. Perhaps because the model number to be installed varies with exhaust heat treatment, the detailed model number of the CPU is no comment.

Also, as GPD's new product (next-generation product), we found out that the release of the second generation of GPD WIN is under planning. Details of the CPU As you can see from the fact that it is a no comment, detailed specifications are not known and it is expected that the cost will increase by 2 to 30 thousand yen.

20-30K yen more would roughly make it $500-$600

The thing to note though, is that the guy seems to be a Japanese reseller and may have just been told preliminary thinking just as we have been

Could also be the RRP they will quote, which as we know, is generally miles from what it actually sells for

Well, keep in mind the GPD Win was said to cost $400 and quickly dropped to $330.

Yes, that is what I was saying in that last sentence in my last post.  Well at least that is what that jumble of words was meant to convey :).  I have fixed the grammar so it makes a bit more sense.

It is interesting though, that the dealer they were interviewing seems to be from the company behind the 3rd party accessories for the WIN, ie like the tempered glass screen protector and the hard protective shell.

Looks like the new Microsoft Surface Pro which was announced today, will have a Core M3-7Y30 in the entry model.  It will also be fanless - presumably using lots of heat pipes etc

Yeah, I hope the Win 2 will have decent cooling so maybe the fan isn't always required.

Btw I just read that GPD initially said that the Win (1) was going to be $500.
So, if they now say $600, we can expect something around $400-450 I guess.

Would be nice to get some more news about the WIN 2.  Haven't heard anything from Wade in a while now.

He's been down the lab for the past month trying to cook up the one true keyboard layout that won't upset anyone and start a 100 page post-cunami about everyone's perfect layouts and somehow turns into a scientific conference about aerodynamics and the mating call of whales around page 68.

Unfortunately, it looks like we are in that lull moment.  It does seem a bit better that we are curving toward 7Y30.  The only curve ball is going to be timing of the GPD Win 2 and if Intel releases 10nm 8Y30 before then.

Still no clickable L3 or R3 buttons?
If not major disappointment.
If they are truly looking at  core M CPU ,that's the only good news so far.
No word of a bigger screen?

L3 / R3 will be on the shoulder. IT will be a few mm bigger, so it's possible it'll have a slightly larger screen. Core M is a wonderful news and puts the device into an entirely new category. Also a user-replacable m.2 slot is confirmed so no more need to mess with expensive and slow microSD cards.
