^ I'm a genuine long time Dingoo member and OpenPandora lover --> http://boards.openpandora.org/user/2120-sony

Ever since I read about the pandora a few months ago Iv wanted it, the 1ghz model is simply impossible to find. The ones that show up on ebay rarely ship outside the US. A shame it gets such a bad rap in the mainstream, however that amazing battery life with Q3/strife/hexen makes me want it! Its a unique experience.

For me as of now:
gameboy sp ags101 (played it for the first time in 2015..it was love.)
PSP/PSP go    (first handheld I used emulators on OH MY)
Gpd XD
Gameboy Micro (again first time in 2015 I adore it for final fight one)
Gpd g7    (my close to perfect gamestreamer with that bad screen)
Xperia play  (a missed opportunity)
Gameboy    (Played tons of pirated 300 in 1 games back when I dint know what piracy was)
Sega Game Gear    (why so much hate, portable mortal kombat!)
Tetris       (yup I had tons of these tetris players my dad loved them)
Monopoly  (strange Tiger sort of handheld I dunno why i liked it so much bought it at singapore airport..missed my flight)

I can't believe nobody's even mentioned the Gamepark GP32.

Sure, the specs are laughably antiquated by modern standards and weren't even all that impressive in 2002:

  • ARM920T @ 133mhz
  • 8MB RAM
  • 3.5" 320x240 non-backlit LCD
  • SMC flash cards (topped out at 128mb)
  • 4 action buttons and a wonky joystick
  • Pitiful original games selection

But it was the first open-ish handheld, and the first handheld capable of homebrew and/or emulation.  If it wasn't for the GP32, there would probably never have been a GP2X, or Wiz, or caanoo, or a Pandora, or probably even a dingoo.  Many of the devs who ported and perfected most of the emulators we use today got started on the GP32.  The GP32X forums are where the whole open handheld scene was born.

I still have my GP32 somewhere, and it's still one of my all-time favorites.  In it's day, it was the best (only) thing going for mobile retro gaming.  And its legacy is still pretty damn impressive.

I do not really have a Top 10, but here it goes:

- Nintendo Gameboy Original (man, with the Lightboy and Soundboy attachments, it weighted bricks)

- Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP (cute little clamshell device, super convenient)

- Sony PlayStation Portable (so versatile, runs so many emulators, it's beyond belief at that time)

- Sony PlayStation Vita 1k (love the machine, it's screen, its overall feel, but sadly the game selection can be more)

- Nintendo 3DS XL (finally a decent sized DS, but a year+ after I got it, Nintendo announced the NEW 3DS...Well, still hope Nintendo will eventually get on the HD screen bandwagon)

- Tapwave Zodiac (a palm os device, in the days of handspring treos, blackberries, Symbian phones, the Zodiac was like the future, a PDA that could be a game device.)

Honorable mentions: Gameboy Color, PSP Go, Nintendo DS Lite, Gamegear

People haven't received the XD yet and it is already second in the polls... Sure.

mhmm i thought that too about the GPD XD getting 2nd place when Sony doesn't have it yet lol but , i Really really don't think that sony is working for GPD if you're thinking that part

sony has been part of this forum for like the longest time , i think everyone's just excited about the XD maybe that's why it got 2nd place
i'm cheating on my PSPs

I think it's hard to beat The Gameboy and DS line for handheld gaming, I've had tons of handhelds over the years but it's the Nintendo stuff that gets the most use.

I guess my top ten would be:

1 - DS Lite
2 - GBA SP
3 - 3DS XL
4 - DSi XL
5 - Dingoo A320
6 - GPD G5A
7 - Gameboy
8 - PSP 2003
9 - PSP Go
10- JXD S7300b

DS Lite is actually one of my least favourite DS consoles now, however it has that GBA port and got so much use over the years it has to be top, the combined GBA and DS library is such an amazing collection of software.

Also while not being a console gotta give a shout out to the HTC G1. It ran emulators well enough at the time and had conveniently placed 1, Q, W and A buttons on the left hand side which meant it was a nice early gaming phone. Even had the trackball on the right which was supported in an early version of Quake, pretty good for the time.

I had two.  I think I still have one with a cracked screen out in the garage.  I may still have my Tapwave Zodiac also.  lol...

My favorite was the Sharp Zodiac.  It wasn't a gaming machine, but the games were great.  I even ported a few emulators to it, back in the day.  I loved that system!
