XD Screen Replacement - Quick and Dirty
« on: August 23, 2016, 12:58:23 am »
You will need:

Official Screen Replacement from GPD:
http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/5-5-inch-screen-for-GPD-XD-16GB-32GB-64GB-game-console/1281164_32678170823.html

Fine Phillips Screwdriver

Pry-tool/guitar pick/fine blade for removing the screen from the case and prying open the case.

Something like the iSesamo (good tool to have):
https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Tools/iSesamo-Opening-Tool/IF145-130

Or I used a woodcrafting knife (not on the case itself, I used my fignernail to separate the halves):
http://www.aliexpress.com/popular/wood-crafting-knifes.html

Please excuse the images and the mess. I did this pretty quick as I was about to go on a trip when I got the screen and the images were a last second thought.

Step 1:
Remove the 4 rubber nubs around the screen and the 4 Phillips screws.

Step 2:
Using a pick, pry-tool, or a fingernail, separate the 2 halves of the upper case. Do not use anything metal like a screwdriver or you will leave marks in the soft plastic. It's best to have 2 tools and work your way around from one side to the other. The bottom where the hinge is will be a little tougher but be gentle as not to break the plastic clips.

Step 3:
Here's the back of the screen. You'll need to unclip the ZIF connectors and remove the ribbon cables. Careful not to the crease the thick black one as that is your connection to the mainboard. The others come out with the screen. You do not need to remove the board there.

Step 4:
I should have taken another picture here but I forgot. You'll need to carefully pry under the blue part of the case where the screen is glued with a very thin tool. Your fingernail will not work here unless you really don't care to damage the screen. I didn't just in case there was a problem with the replacement. At the bottom is the new screen. Where you see the 3M paper is where the adhesive is and you can see where it would be on the original. I found the bottom the hardest part to remove.
After removing the old screen, remove the 3M paper and press the new screen into place, making sure the ribbon cables go in first and are not creased:

Step 5:
This is the replacement screen fitted and re-connected. Be careful not to crease the large orange ribbon cable, it's generally a bad idea and there is lots of room in the case for the cable. Hold the other cables in place with some tape, I reused the tape that was there and again don't press to hard as to crease it. The black ribbon cable is a bit of a tight squeeze. Make sure all the ribbon cables are even when reconnected so they have a good solid connection.

Step 6:
Replace the shell, the screws, and the rubber nubs.
Enjoy.

I again forgot to take a picture but originally I had a line of pixels across the top that only showed hues of red and black. I believe the problem was due to a hardware glitch where if you turn the system on/off while charging a resistor or some other component gets damaged and screws the screen up.

So be careful when you turn your device on/off and make sure to unplug it or if using the RKBatchTool do not use the RESET button.

Hmm? This guide was of my replacement.

Most likely not. All the pinout would have to.match and it would probably have to be the same resolution anyway and the board there I imagine is what drives the lcd so they would need to be redone.
It doesn't seem possible to me.

Oh ok. It's the exact same. I bet that it is still susceptible to the power on/off bug but it works perfectly well.

A new kernel is needed for that.

Hello, why is the replacement screen 5.5 inches? I thought the GPD XD has a 5 inch screen?
Also which launcher are you using?

I'm not sure if it's 5" or 5.5" but the replacement is sold by GPD themselves. I'm using HALauncher.

I'll do my best. I'm just afraid in "ungluing" the current screen. It's glued in some kind of back structure, isn't it? I will try next week when I return from holydays. I'm enjoying GPD Win just now :-P

Yeah it's stuck with 3M double sided tape. You don't have to be too careful since the old screen is already borked but carefully prying with a thin tool like a guitar pick or knife and working your way around and it should eventually pop out.

Take your time and don't bend the shell too much and you won't have any problems.
