[GCW-Zero] Win7 USB connection failing to recognize... [FIX]
« on: August 20, 2013, 03:56:25 am »
I'm unsure if there is anyone else running to this issue, since I did a fair amount of searching and came up with little.

I kept getting a failed device driver for my GCW.  I finally found the fix:

Open device manager
Under Other Devices Right-Click RNDIS/Ethernet Gadget
Select Update Driver Software
Select Browse My Computer
Select Let me pick from a list...
Select Network Adapter *
Select "Microsoft Corporation" in the left panel (important do not select just "Microsoft", the drivers will fail)
Select "Remote NDIS based Internet sharing device"
Hit yes to use the driver.

Then you should be able to ftp to 10.1.1.2

I hope this helps someone else.
YSM

* Edit: I found out that this was missing.  If you have it once selected it doesn't show up again.  When I ran through the steps I didn't realize that it was being skipped.  Sorry if this screwed anyone up.

Hi I have got the same problem but with windows xp but it won't let me follow it with the same steps!
It never gives you the option of selecting Microsoft corporation from the list.
Any ideas?
Thanks

http://boards.dingoonity.org/gcw-general/%28tutorial%29using-usb-connection-on-windows/

That is the post that got me started with these steps.

So the key might be in steps 5&6

5.- Look for microsoft in the list on the left, choose it.

6.- On the list on the right select Remote NDIS compatible device.

Besides that I don't know.  I don't have an XP machine around anymore, sorry.

Just got a new desktop PC, installed all drivers from manufacturer CDs and suddenly I am missing this NDIS option.
I am connecting the GCW0, it finds it as unknown device. In my laptop the NDIS where installed I guess and it was automatically found.

Now, following these directions, I cannot find no matter how hard I try this Remote NDIS driver. There is no other devices link, but I am looking at system devices for example which has a lot of different stuff, but no NDIS driver. I even looked at hidden devices from an option, I tried everything. Why is this thing not there? I am using Windows 7 professional and those are the ones I had on my laptop too.

I tried to search on the internet but most links go to suspicous 3rd party sites and I don't want to do something wrong and filled with malicious software, in my new PC I just bought. I tried to microsoft site, didn't found, maybe I'll try again. But I don't understand why this is not there, it's supposed to be with Win7 already, maybe I'll check the manufacturer CDs again in case I forgot something. But is there an safe link to install these drivers with no 3rd party drivertoolkit shit?

Keep in mind there are two "Microsoft" sections under said driver list, make sure you're looking at the right one.

Problem was, I couldn't even reach that list so that I can choose, there wasn't "Other Devices Right-Click RNDIS/Ethernet Gadget" in the list, nor something similar in the other lists.

Problem sort of solved by trying to connect my other android devices. Even these one didn't get recognized. I had to install something relative (like Android SDK because it also installs OEM USB driver) in order to somehow get this working. It's unstable. Then I had to plug restart two times, third time I suddenly can connect to the GCW through ftp. That was it!

It does work but I still don't see an others->rndis list though on device manager. Now my other android devices can be seen too. Go figure..

Don't think it was solved. Booted my computer again, nothing is recognized :(
This is driving me crazy!

Then found some USB 3.0 drivers from Asus, maybe the fact that it's USB 3.0 makes problems?
Suddenly my android devices are recognized with this. But still not the GCW0 now. And I don't understand what I did previously to have it working :P

I think I'll buy an SD card and do it the old tedious way. Compile->copy to SD, insert SD to GCW->remove SD
Or install Ubuntu on a second partision, since I might be developing with the linux devkit. And maybe there the USB works.

Seriously, and I can't easilly find solution, someone having exactly the same problem.

Or - you can connect over wi-fi.

Just for your information (so that someone reads it and doesn't get the same trouble), I realized a bad USB cable produced the problem. It failed most of the times and happened to work for a while in my laptop. Wat?

But would be cool to try the wifi? How to do that? I don't seem much information in system setup or network.

There is a dedicated WiFi config app under Applications (old version) or Settings (new version). You can enter the details of the network you want to connect to there, save and then connect. It's a bit primitive, but it should get the job done.
