GCWMenu

Its time to renew Gmenu2x, and create a better menu for GCW Zero:  GCWMenu.

Wanted developers, designers and users to do this.

Developers: To create the magic with a code.
Designers: To create beautiful skins and icons.
Users: To say that they would like to improve and as should be the new menu.

Source code is here:  http://projects.qi-hardware.com/index.php/p/gmenu2x/source/tree/master/

It seeks to achieve the following improvements:

- Best Performance of the system fonts, more softer.

- Best icon layout. Arranged in a grid, and not as far out of proportion.

- Improve the top bar, feature selection. Better placement.

- Create beautiful icons, square with rounded corners look likes iphone or android, or any modern device

- Create a new and official skin for GCW Zero.

Actually, the gmenu2x fork that GCW officially uses can be found here: http://projects.qi-hardware.com/index.php/p/gmenu2x/
It has several improvements and bugfixes over the ancient code you linked.

If you think of an inprovement on a larger scale, honestly I'd recommend writing a new menu from scratch. Gmenu2x source code is very dirty and hard to develop.

This is the germ of a project to make a new menu!

Start new menu together, if gmenu2x have a dirty code.

The initial proposal was to use gmenu2x because it is easier to correct a code, to do all over again.
But if there are developers who want to make a menu from scratch, we can create together.

But I cant do much in programming, because I'm not developer only graphic designer,
I can help with the art direction, creating beautiful icons and skins.

That is always welcome :)
As long as the graphics are licensed on Creative Commons or other liberated licenses that let us use the assets.

I'd like to see something that allows for larger icons, or maybe banner images.

I'd also like if there were a standardized way to add shortcuts directly to emulated games. So I could add Shantae to my home screen and not have to open Gambatte, scroll through the selector browser list, and open it from there.

My $0.02. Gmenu is ok, but I would love to see a new menu developed.

OH, and it'd be nice to flip through the menu with the analog nub as well as the D-Pad :-)

I believe i mentioned this on another thread, but i would like something similar to Ubuntu's Unity or XBMC's menu.  What weve got now is great, but the option to throw a different menu on our GCW0 is an awesome idea!  Im looking forward to whatever you all conjure up.

Now that all systems are 512mb ram I would like the option for animated icons.

Questions for the devs: Will it be possible to have multiple menu systems installed on the Zero at once, with an easy way for the user to switch between them on the fly? Can a radically different menu system be developed (one that is not simply a "theme" or "skin" of the default menu, i.e. one that "works" different rather than just looking different) without major rewrites to the underlying OS?

There is a script running in the background that checks if a game/program was closed. If it was, it relaunches gmenu2x. You can modify this script to run any other menu system you might have. While this isn't automatic or on-the-fly, it's not hard to modify. And I'm sure if other menu systems get popular, someone will write a handy tool to modify the script on-the-fly without a need to open and edit any text files.

As you certainly know, ( http://boards.dingoonity.org/gcw-general/new-app-launcher-to-replace-gmenu2x/ ) I am willing to work on a new menu. :)

We need to get in touch.

This is a set of round corner icons, for new launcher, or new gmenu theme for GWC-ZERO.

Although it's a different font, a capital G on an orange background makes me think of a certain company...
