A Noobie's very brief thoughts on the GCW-ZERO.
« on: August 30, 2014, 04:15:56 pm »
Not too good at all this but felt compelled to do a very brief synopsis of this device. I am a new owner.

My first impression was how well this device feels when one plays games on it. It just feels and fits perfectly in my hands like no other emulator handheld I have played [ and I have played many]. The build quality is lightly weighted but does not feel cheap but rather quite precision like and well thought out. Well done here.

My second impression was the ease of navigation on the screen. I really fancy the way the shoulder buttons bring you to the different folders available. Quite convenient indeed. Again well done. Speaking of the screen, the resolution is perfectly suited considering playing 8/16 bit games does not require high resolutions. Also the screen size is perfect for my liking ; well done again  ;)

My third third impression is mixed. I will say the preinstalled .opk's and all the other open sourced ones I have downloaded are very well done indeed. The emulators = Nintendo,Sega,MSX, NEC,Vectrex play very well for the most part.I say 'for the most part' becasue 32X and CD games for Sega/NEC seem either not to play smoothly or not play at all. I was pleasantly surprised how well the POTATOR /Watara Supervision emulator played. Yes I like monochrome Gameboy wanna be's  ;D. Otherwise ,everything else I have thrown at it plays superbly. Well done.

My last impression [finally] is sorting files. I am a noobie at all this so perhaps with time I will get more proficient. Maybe not because I am a old, inpatient git  ::)  ;D. With that said,it is confusing for me, to the point of being somewhat confounded, why some emulators/games must be done via internal memory/FTP's versus just being placed on a micro sd card like others??!! I've no problems filing away on my sd card and rather enjoy the hunt. However, the use of the GCW command app and[ again sorry for the repetitiveness] using FTP's is something I do not fancy and fine it inconsistent at best. Again this is entirely my experience [or lack of] and perspective. Not for a moment am I looking to troll or start a fury for I do really like the device and have no regrets with my purchase. I do suppose because of my inability to download these various emulators/games as such, I am missing out on some fun  >:(  ;D.  Yes I have watched  the instructional videos. It all does not work smoothly for me at this time.  :'(  ;)

I had a device that emulated more 'powerfully' or shall I say with more variety. It was easier for me as far as putting what I wanted solely  on my sd card . However, if one looked the wrong way, fissures would occur. The build quality was rather shitty.Something was wrong with the plastic casing I suppose. I would rather have a device like this one, that is significantly less GBP and does not threaten me that it will fissure at any given interval, than own the prior device referred to.Yes I prefer the GCW in spite of the variety the other device offered. No names mentioned here.  8)

So there is my brief opinion/rant for what it is worth. No insults intended.

Happy Holiday to all the USA!!

Cheers!!!

Good write-up!
You can put apps on internal memory or external SD, but the home directories (which get created when you run the app for the first time) are always created on the internal memory.  Generally, the 'engine' type apps, such as Open Titus, Reminiscence, Bermuda Syndrome etc that require the original game data files invariably require them in their relevant home directory.
I hope this clears things up for you a bit!

Hello there!

I can recommend a few things to you to help you along!

First get hold of GCW Zero Manager for windows, It makes life a lot easier!
http://boards.dingoonity.org/gcw-releases/gcw-zero-manager-for-windows-alpha-0-1/
It can turn installing emulators and the like into drag and drop and click install and drag and drop for files!

You might also want to take a look at Ziz's OPK Manager! while it doesn't show everything made (Only "Released" stuff that is fully approved) it makes life a bit easier

If you got some things you want to ask please dont hesitate to post here or join us in IRC and we will help you out as best as we can:

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this! I'm new to the Dingoonity, so something like this is very useful.I just bought my GCW Zero yesterday, and am waiting impatiently for it to arrive. I had been using my PSP for years to do retro emulation, but not everything works as it should and to my liking. The Zero appears to be the catch-all for this type of stuff. I also had a Nvidia Shield but that proved to be too cumbersome to carry around, and with the last few updates it's made emulation terrible. I like the portability of the Zero much more, and the fact it runs pure Linux instead of Android.
