The Ur-Quan Masters: Official addons as separate download?
« on: November 23, 2014, 01:15:47 am »
In the latest build of The Ur-Quan Masters the voices and the 3DO music are optional and have to be installed in the ~/.uqm/addons folder if one wants to use them. I'm curious if you as users prefer this behaviour, since it makes the download and the installed game smaller, or if you'd like them packaged within the .opk, saving you the time of extra downloading and copying the files, but also bloating up the .opk file size.
I'm talking about a lot here. The voices package has 115 MB, about 10 times the size of the game without voices.

I prefer it all as additional downloads because it allows one to choose not to use the 3DO voice pack if they like , but also, just as importantly, use the community-music-remix packages, which are really worth the additional download time, for those that can afford it.

PRO:
- a smaller opk size;
- the possibility to use alternative music/voice packages.

CONS:
- not 3DO enhanced sound "plug & play";
- impossibility to put all "3DO additional datas" in an external SD-Card.

A potential solution could be to make an opk "all inclusive" with a menu option to disable the 3DO addons and to use alternative packages.
Another solution could be to make two official opks, one bigger with the 3DO addons, one smaller with only basic datas.

PS: I presume that all additional datas can be used without "copyright" problems...

Actually I've slightly modified the game sourcecode, so that there are now 2 addon folders loaded. One in the .opk filesystem, the other one in ~/.uqm/addons. So, even if some content is included in the .opk, the user is free to add additional official content files via ~/.uqm/addons.

Regarding the copyright: I've already put the game content in the .opk, which is unter the same license as the official addons, so if there are issues (I think there aren't), they are not effected by adding or removing addons from the .opk.

Edit:
