Ports naming
« on: May 21, 2014, 05:26:43 pm »
As you can see I'm trying to port some zx81 dingux ports to GCW0. I've a doubt about naming them.

It's better to call them dingux-<emulator> or better to change to gcw0-<emulator>? I'm working on a emulator port form caanoo and it's a bit weird to work with caanoo-...

Also about the name that appears in menu. What is the better option (for example, for dingux-cap32 port):
- dingux-cap32
- Caprice32
- gcw0-cap32
- ...

I think you should keep the original names, e.g. Caprice32 for the CPC emu.

I like the prefix "dingux" (like dingux-caprice, dingux-hugo, dingux-2600, etc.), but also the original emulator name sounds good... instead I would not use the prefix "GCW0" !

PS: obviously, according to your choice, I will adjust the PNGs! ;)

I suggest not to use "GCW" in the game titles without permission from GCW LLC. It wrongly implies that GCW LLC has something to do with the copyright to the program. I don't think they mind right now, but anything can happen in the future and it's better to be safe than sorry. Just keep the original names of the emulators.

That's bullshit. It's like saying that you can't use the word "advance" in any homebrew you make for the GameBoy Advance. The name GCW is not trademarked, so you can use it freely.

In any case, at the end, I think that the best choice is to use the original name of the emulator...

I'm with Paul on this. Game Consoles Worldwide owns the right to the tradename "GCW Zero", but just "GCW" (without "Zero") should be no problem.

Maybe I'm missing something, but why should the name be changed in the first place? I find it somewhat redundant renaming a game / application / whatever just because it has been ported to a different platform. If it did make sense, we would have every single OS software being renamed for different platforms (Windows, OS X, Linux), portables and maybe even for different Linux distributions! That of course would not make sense, at least I don't want every app reminding me where I'm running it. I already know what I'm using!

It should be clear from context (download page / repository / readme / other documentation with the application) on which platform the particular version should be used (actually, it might make sense to put a postfix to the version number instead of renaming).

So, IMO, the original name is the best choice!
My Hocoslamfy highscore: 107. Also try Freedroid for GCW0!

Just to be clear, when you say "original name" you mean dingux-cap32 or Caprice32 (focusing in Amstrad example)

zx81 renamed each port (dingux-cap32, caanoo-cap32, ...) I don't see any sense to mantain dingux- prefix in gcw0, but as changes usually are few... It's not an original emulator port, but a port of a port.

Grrrr perhaps all this is a nonsense.

I mean the name of the "source-emulator", so, for the Amstrad CPC, Caprice32...
in any case the references to Zx-81 remain in the splash screen and in the help file.

Below a modified PNG to look a tangible example! ;)

For me the logical thing to do would be naming every emulator for what it is. Like naming an N64 emulator for the GCW0 or DS, GCW0-N64 and NDS-N64 respectively, although this does cause the problem of what to call the next N64 emulator for either of the systems. You could just call one John's NDS-N64 and the other Jack's NDS-N64.

I always feel like naming it after someone's own fashion is similar to nicknaming ones friends.
Like calling Bartholomeus Bart. Eventually the names grow on them and you just don't know any better.

But on the other hand it is hardly worth discussing something as trivial as emulator names.
