Title: Download santino local pack v1
Post by: santino on January 04, 2010, 11:00:46 PM
Hi guys!

Here is the first version of my new local pack. All shareware files are included and everygame should work, too. Hope you will enjoy it. I will update this from time to time. ;)

The doom customwads only work with full doom2.wad. ;) Just extract them to /local/games/czdoom and use DoomGoo to start them.

(http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/2227/67770898.png)

How about heretic and mplayer or is mplayer out of the question

Here is the list of games I'm trying to keep up to date. Should contain all the dingux games that were ever released:
http://dingoowiki.com/index.php/Dingux:Games

If you're going to include Quake, please use my custom keyboard-config instead of the default one. All the buttons are correctly mapped, so players can enjoy the game. You can get it here (http://dingoowiki.com/index.php/Quakux#Controls).

Also, please DO NOT include my proof-of-concept port of Prince of Persia. It was never meant to be released and is unplayable.
I don't know why people keep putting it in their local packs ;)

Great idea man! I like the looks of this pack. Its good that you categorized the games and left out unfinished projects. Its embarrassing to brag about how cool the dingoo is with Dingux then hand it over to a friend only to have him load some wacky unfinished home brew game or app.

My only suggestion would be to add the all the current best console and arcade emulators to this pack. But that's kind of obvious isn't it?

Looking forward to the future download! ;D

Just a couple of games off the top of my head:
* Quake (sdlquake is 1.5fps faster than Quakux, but also too bright imo)
* dgFrontier (http://david.dantoine.org/comentario/noticia/82/) (the version from this link, as is superior to the older port)
* openggs
* wizznic
* freedroid
* gnurobbo
* mr drillux
* REminiscence
* raw (another world)
* Ur-Quan Masters (Star Control II)
* stppc

Thats quite funny you mentioned this, because this port made me do this new pack. I was very frustrated, because I really love this game and at first I thought I was too unskilled to handle the controls.:D

And about mplayer im not sure. Is there a script for mplayer to start in a Moviefolder for chosing the files to play? Like Doomgoo for example. I will play around with mplayer and see if its working ok.

For the games like REminiscence, raw, Ur-Quan Masters we need a new genre called Adventures, right? I will need someone who designs great Icons. Need Icons for those genres in DekUI Style, like a gun for shooter, sword for adventures or something like this.

Well, I simply recompiled Freeprince to work on the dingoo. But freeprince is still in it's alpha stage, and a lot of things are unimplemented in it. Totally unplayable for me.

Well, for mplayer you need to use a FPU enabled kernel. And FPU reserves some ram, making some games unplayable.

You should add Snes9x.  ;)

New Update. I will also add Wolf3d and rott. Any other wishes?

@ zear

Ive added Quakux, the sdl release wasnt much faster and is truly too bright. I also left the weapon visible, so there will be no more threads like "where the hell is my weapon in quake??". :)

Probably being a bit picky here but it's just a suggestion, change the JumpNrun category to Platform?

I am going to second snes9x and is it possible to add gnuboy since the Dingoo  version is buggy.

Isn't the Dingoo version identical to the Dingux version?

The pack slowly grows... :)

@ Zear

Ive tried you keymap for quake and the run key is missing, isnt it? Otherwise your mapping is great.

Yeah, afair you have to enable "always run" in the options.

Thanks santino! Good job with the screenshots, makes browsing so much nicer :)

One problem though, MrDrillux won't run for me for some reason. And maybe get dmenu from svn repos as it has ReadOnly  and RTC support.

oh and btw, http://omploader.org/ is nice..

edit: Supertransball2 has a faulty WorkDir

Title: Re: Download santino local pack v1
Post by: santino on January 17, 2010, 11:45:18 AM
Thank you for the feedback. I will test the svn of dmenu and if its stable I will include it. Mr. Drillux takes long time to start, but it should work. Try waiting a bit longer. :)

I'm just gonna download this for some of the included games and add them into what I already have.  I tried once before, and could never get Arkanoid to work.

thanks santino for this cool pack ;)
i'm glad to finally play supertux and giana's return!! :)

there is just 1 problem, Doomgoo doesn't work at all, it's annoying coz  before i made the switch to your pack i was   on the new toddler local pack and it worked fine...
could you please help me with that ?!

Title: Re: Download santino local pack v1
Post by: santino on January 19, 2010, 07:57:29 AM
You need the doom2.wad as retail and the Wadpack from the first post. Extract them to /local/games/czdoom and then just start DoomGoo. Maybe you have to rename the doom2.wad to doom.wad.

Title: Re: Download santino local pack v1
Post by: arnoldiibus on January 19, 2010, 09:05:31 AM
thanks!, i did exactly what you told me to do but still nothing... ???

do i need to edit the menu_game.cfg??
what bout the goomgoo.cfg, megawads, partials conversions and retails files?, they are not included in your pack, do i need them, do they work?
also could you tell me where to find icons for winter jumper and openggs, i can't seem to find any

cheers

Title: Re: Download santino local pack v1
Post by: santino on January 19, 2010, 09:15:32 AM
Did you install doomgoo on your self? This pack is using a modified version of doomgoo. And only this one will work. I think you replaced it by the standard one.
If not, just post the terminal output that comes if you start a mod, for example quake2.

The icons of openggs and winterjumper arent included, because the games were not. But I will update the pack soon and then they will come. ;)

Title: Re: Download santino local pack v1
Post by: arnoldiibus on January 19, 2010, 09:48:28 AM
yes indeed, i installed doomgoo by myself thinking that it would work...i took the one from toddler local pack
that's a shame coz it took me a while to make it work on toddler local pack, do you know if they will work in the future?
are prboom and czdoom that different?
what's a terminal output ?, sorry i'm new to the scene, especially linux :-[ i usually always find a solution by myself, it's the 1st time i post something on this forum.
only doomgoo doesn't work, all the other ports are fine!

i know about openeggs and giana sisters, i'm just trying to add/erase a game/emulators, put an icon by myself
with toddler pack i could never do it, i wasn't sure where to do it with all the different themes (dekui, hellsing, base)..it's the reason why i'm using your pack now, it's seem simpler, and i will finally be able to add emulators and games by myself without having to wait for a new local pack update.

sorry to bother you with all my questions and thanks for your help, i really appreciate it :)
i guess i'll wait for your update to get the icons
you did a great job with this pack

I have any questions about the new registers at the dmenu. How can I set the time and date? Or better, is there an "easy" way to hold the loading screen, but remove the time and date register?

Title: Re: Download santino local pack v1
Post by: conso on January 24, 2010, 04:57:54 AM
I'm currently downloading.
From your list, I'll miss picodrive, fba320, upce and a good c64-emu.
I'd also like to have a calc, a text-reader and a writer for notes.

It'd be nice to always have the best emulator for each platform dingux supports.

Title: Re: Download santino local pack v1
Post by: fuzzi23 on January 24, 2010, 01:37:39 PM
And another question; why becomes any things (winter, gnuboy) new names, because I think it is better to use the old terms for all the themes. So are no changes are necessary. There are 13 Themes using the old terms, but only one theme (ffw) uses the new ones.
And why don't you add all the old and new themes in to the pack? All the themes are now nearly up to date, so everybody can use them if they will. Sorry, this is no refection but I wonder about it. :)

EDIT: @conso: Take the other games and apps from toddlers local pack. (http://boards.dingoonity.org/dingux-games-and-homebrew/dingux-local-pack-v0-31/)Because santino only takes new releases of the apps and games into his pack.

Title: Re: Download santino local pack v1
Post by: santino on January 24, 2010, 02:20:24 PM
No, I would also include old releases, if there are no new ones. But I dont want to add games like price of persia which are nearly unplayable. ;)

@ conso

The next update will include these emulators! :)

To the themes... I have to add the game genres to all that themes to include them. The icons for the genres were missing. Thats why Ive done the fastforward theme. ;) So if you want to help me and create these icons. I will add the themes. :)

And I think there isnt an app to set the time yet. You could do by telnet and date, but ive read that the native os will set it back to 1977 again.

The native sets it back, but you can download "Linux SPL installer" bootloader from the same link, which makes linux boot first, so unless you intentionally boot into native, the problem with the clock is solved.

Just a quick question: How would I get the full version of wolfenstein 3d?
You have to download this pack:
http://dl.openhandhelds.org/cgi-bin/dingoo.cgi?0,0,0,0,30,131
And then replace the executable in /local/games/wolf3d (the wolf3d and wolf3d.linux files) with the ones from the pack. And of course add the fullversion files from your retail wolf3d (mine were called *.wl6). There are different executables for 1.1 1.4 and so on. Thats why I havent included them by standard. ;)

Hi santino. The first three themes (Atari, 2Blue and DekUI) now complete. Check out in themes section here. I added one new genre (shoot em up) and I renamed a little bit. But I only change names and layout as I like it. Tell me what do you think. You can change things if you dont like it. Ah, and you must delete some games like prince of persia and so on. You must check it. The games are all sorted alphabetical.

Title: Re: Download santino local pack v1

Nice work fuzzi! :)
I like your new icons.

But why didnt you sort the genres by alphabet?

//EDIT

So people Ive started the new patch now. This is my ToDo-list. If you find something is missing just make a post. ;)

Todo:

- adding dgclock (so you can use the rtc)
- adding more themes (DekUI,Atari,2Blue,Hellsing,Mario,DeepGux) no default, because it looks very ugly. Is there someone using that theme?

- adding picodrive
- adding fba320
- adding upce
- adding some kind of c64 emulator
- adding the calculator
- adding greader2x
- adding a writer
- updating dgchess to 1.1.1

So, did I miss an update or something new?

As I sayed before, its only my taste. I sorted it by my favorite genres, but you can change them for your local pack. Ah, and it gives me pleasure that you like my icons. :)

I want to start adding the sub menu genres to the minimal themes, but it looks like that it is not as easy as I think, because there is no third sub menu titel I can use for the cfg. Anybody knows how I can handle this?

I got to this point too and I dont think there is such a thing implemented yet. I would do the game genres at one level with the other menupoint like apps and system. Until there is a new update of dmenu which allows deeper menus. :)

EDIT: Base and Simple theme now updated too at the theme section here.

Joyrider just released his gmenu2x port. (look here (http://boards.dingoonity.org/dingux-releases/gmenu2x-for-dingux-!/))
What do you think? Change to gmenu2x? Or maybe use both dmenu and gmenu with a bootscript?

What do you think? Change to gmenu2x? Or maybe use both dmenu and gmenu with a bootscript?

you can actually include both and people can choose what they want :
1) make  2 main scripts in sbin named main.gmenu2x and main.dmenu (they both contain the code to start the menu as if it was a main script)
2) make another 2 (dge) scripts one named gmenu2x.dge and one named dmenu.dge
3) in the gmenu2x.dge do a "rm /boot/local/sbin/main" and a "cp /boot/local/sbin/main.gmenu2x /boot/local/sbin/main"
4) in the dmenu2x.dge do a "rm /boot/local/sbin/main" and a "cp /boot/local/sbin/main.demnu/boot/local/sbin/main"
5) make an icon dmenu that links to gmenu2x.dge
6) make an icon in gmenu2x that links to dmenu.dge
7) do not forget to choose one menu as the default one (by copying the main file )

basically it will replace the main script, and dingux will check for the new main script and start the other menu

optionally you can have even more such scripts to make for example dinguxxmb or FSM (by darfgraf) or micromenu the default menu ...

that way users can switch from dmenu to gmenu2x and vice versa. (and or other menu's) and they can choose which one they want from within the menu's

the only thing i don't know is how dmenu restarts itself, if it lets the main script do it this will work

Gmenu2x is so much better, so just use that instead of dmenu. ;)

Yes thats my opinion too since I played a bit with gmenu. :D
Its just sorry for fuzzi who invested his time modding that themes. But I coded a tool which now never will be released... Never thought were would come such a great thing for dingoo out of nothing.

@ fuzzi

We need new items for all games. The ones from dmenu all have some kind of border which doesnt look as good on gmenu. And its a bit harder on 32x32 to get a good icon. But I think you were able to do some nice ones. :)

I agree, gmenu2x really tops dmenu in several ways and keeping dmenu shouldn't be a priority. Maybe dmenu will top gmenu2x at some point in the future, it should be no big deal to switch back then.
If micro-menu gets OC-support, a script for switching the menu might make sense, though... I guess.

Now it's time to finetune all games/apps/emulators to integrate well into gmenu2x. That means adding the .dge, a readme and stuff like that.

You can't really compare a newly developped menu with a menu that has been around and used for years with succes. Dmenu is nice and i still think you should include both menu's in any local pack. The author of dmenu probably had more work creating the Dmenu  than i had porting gmenu2x doesn't seem fair does it ? So include both and support your developpers, let the user choose which menu he wan't, and don't force them to a certain menu. I know i didn't ever use gmenu2x on my gp2x i preferered the default menu with a certain skin. So please include them both and if you need help with the scripts to switch menu's let me know ! You don't want to loose any developpers for this little device since they are sparse to begin with !

edit:
I'll make some example scripts for you local pack creators you could use to achive this give me a few minutes :)

Doesn't the pack get a little bloated then? I mean most people only use one menu and will never touch the other. I think the best idea is to create 2 packs, one with dmenu and one with gmenu2x. And I don't think that you should use something just because of the fact that someone put alot of effort into it. The original author of gmenu2x also put alot of effort in his menu. ;)

isn't it bloated to make 2 packs wich contains all the same applications and stuff ??? while menu's are just small exe's and a few assets ? nothing compared to 2 local packs :)

made the scripts and tested em they worked with my dingoo just as an example to show it's possible :)

People only use one local pack, they don't have to download them both. While when you include both menus people are forced to have both of them on their sd card, because they don't want to alter anything thats why they're using a local pack. ;)

if they don't wanna have dmenu or gmenu2x or anything else they can still remove it from their sd card.

if people started to read readme's use google a bit and trial and error they would learn something and no local packs would be needed since they could add anything they want themselves...I call it being lazzy :)

The only reason why a local pack is good is to get up to speed and not having to download everything although i'd still prefer to choose what i want to get from the dingoo archive instead of being forced what's supplied in a local pack :)

Thats why Ive coded a tool which let you build up your own local pack based on mine. It was able to create the configfiles for you. Just click what you want and it would create your own local pack.
But due to the release of gmenu2x port I will drop dmenu and use gmenu2x, so theres no need for this tool anymore.;)
Heres a screenshot:
(http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/9205/shrinker.jpg)

Maybe I will redo it for gmenu2x. Next pack will only contain gmenu2x and no dmenu anymore. But it may will come back in the future. Dmenu takes much time to debug the configfiles and my time is limited. Sorry guys!

And I wont say there is no need for a local pack. Sure you can do it on your own, but people who are new to dingux may not know how to do it. And it got 100+ downloads thats enought feedback for me going on. :)

Looks great.  ;D Handy for people who realy don't want to mess around in the filesystem. Sorry you coded it for nothing, maybe you can modify it easy to work with gmenu2x. ;)

but people who are new to dingux may not know how to do it.

pre-made packs are good in a way, but if someone can flash a dingoo and get it dualbooting properly, then you'd expect that they could at least drag and drop files around on their computer

you know without (us) developpers there wouldn't have been any local pack, give dmenu (author) some support it's a new menu and is still evolving, your basically saying "FU" to one developper, discourage him from continuing his work and maybe make him lose intrested in the dingoo completely and so on. I still think you should include it.

also local packs have some disadvantages as well, they could / can bring certain software in a bad day light, suppose everyone just relies on local packs they'll always have out of date software it could contain bugs which are already fixed in a new version, people won't try *the software* again cause they think it doesn't work while it could have been fixed already.

I'm not saying local packs should go away it's good as a starter pack and nothing more, people should not rely on local packs to add new (dingux) software.

And if it's that hard to debug the configs, why not write a simple (Dynamic) application instead of fixed gui to make your local packs for dmenu ? you could just have a folder with all the apps run through the folders recursively and check the 1st four bytes of the files for the .elf header (7F 45 4C 46) and let the program generate a config file per folder, just an idea :)

I think you do encourage someone, because when you create something and a person makes something better than you, you do want to top that person by making your creation better. Without competition less progress.

that's true but depends on the "point of view" ,we're such a small community that we should all work together to make it grow larger and better. It's not like were all enemies of each other, we help each other out etc. It's homebrew not commercial stuff :)

Amen to that JoyRider I would like to come up with like a developers guideline or a way so we can make sure apps and emu's all function the same or have the same properties so you don't have to remeber how to use each app or emu...
