Title: Dos Emulator?
Post by: shugs81 on January 05, 2010, 02:31:08 pm
Is anyone working on a dos emulator?

I think it would be awesome to play some of the oldschool games like Tie Fighter and Xwing!!!

TBH.... Even if someone did a port of these I think I'd wet my pants!!!

From the freeforums archive, Here's what batman52 had to say about porting DOSBOX to Dingux:

"Anyway, with the latest toolchain dosbox compiles out-of-the-box... unfortunately when lauched it crashes immediately. I supose it is because of the video settings, but I still had no time to investigate. I am quite confident that for a good programmer ( not me ;-) ) should be pretty straightforward to get it work."

However, according to Zear:

"Keep in mind, that x86 port of dosbox uses dynrec core (written in x86 asm). GP2X port also uses one written in arm asm. Unfortunately nobody has written a core in mips asm yet, so dingoo dosbox port would have to run a simple core, and I doubt any game would run in a playable speed."

I'm not sure but I think it would be pretty easy to port dos games on their own to Dingux without use for an emulator, I think if Doom and other games that were originally dos made it across then others can, hoping for a port of the original grand theft auto, because it is freeware now.

Not to derail the topic, but I have NEVER understood the appeal of GTA...a game that basically glorifies (and thus encourages) thuggery, breaking the law, and victimizing the innocent.  That is a game that truly angers me.  Much as I think blaming most of society's ills on music/games, etc is B.S. - I really think those who criticize GTA on this point are actually spot-on on that call.  A truly awful game that belongs in the trash can.  All it can do is encourage young people to grow up to become criminals.
Sorry for the rant, but I just cannot help this one.  I REALLY hate GTA.

There IS a MIPS version of a Dyna Rec - for the PSP. In fact it's included in the standard source of DOSBOX I believe. The PSP CPU is slightly different to the Dingoo A320, so I'm not sure if it's 100% compatible.

GTA has an MA-18 rating. If a young person is somehow encouraged by GTA to become a criminal, the blame should lie with their parents/guardians.

Back on the topic of DOSBOX though, has anyone tried cross-porting the PSP DOSBOX to Dingux?

There is a java based dos emulator (JPC) which could be used now that java for the dingoo has been released. It can be run on nokia n9x phones so may work. Cant vouch for the speed though.
