Powder 1.7 for Dingux
« on: May 22, 2012, 04:59:55 PM »
Powder has finally been ported to dingux!

Quote
To understand POWDER, you should first understand roguelikes. "Roguelike" is a term applied to a wide variety of games which share a common inspiration from the game Rogue. A non-exhaustive list of such games would be: ADOM, Nethack, Crawl, Diablo (I & II), Moria, and Angband. My apologies to the many excellent roguelikes I didn't list. What characterizes these games? The exact specifications are a matter of debate - indeed, I may receive hate mail for including Diablo - but I shall try to write a few:
Tactical play. The unit of action is based on the individual adventurer. The game is not twitch oriented (like Quake, rewarding reflexes & well trained actions) nor is it strategy oriented (like Civilizations or Warcraft, requiring working on the large picture)
Based in Hack and Slash. A roguelike isn't primarily about plot development or telling a story. It is about killing things and acquiring treasure.
Random games. A roguelike is a dungeon crawler where no two games are the same. The maps are different, the items are different, there are no guaranteed win paths.
Permadeath. You die, that is it. No restoring a savegame. Good roguelikes delete your save game after loading them. This is compensated by the replayability of the game.
Complex interactions of properties. While the commands for a roguelike are simple, the potential interactions are not. My favourite example is equipping a silver ring as a weapon in order to damage a creature vulnerable to silver, but not one's other weapons. [Editor: This matches the Hack branch of the roguelike tree, not the Angband branch]
Steam rolling monsters. If a critter is in your way, and weak, you shouldn't even notice it is there.

Niiice, I've been waiting for this to come into the Dingoo itself without the GBA emulator at some point.

I can't wait to try this! I've been deeply addicted to Diablo III lately and wanted something to scratch that itch on the go.

Great game, once you get used to its interface. I haven't played that many Roguelikes, but this may be my favorite so far. A great addition to the Dingoo.

It crashes for me, when i start it.  :'(

It shows the first screen for a second and it crashes.
Does anyone have this problem too? I use open dingux 2nd pre release.

Did anyone try this port on open dingux?

Sweet!
This is exactly the kind of game that I think really shows off what fun an open handheld can be. This game would never be made by a big studio, but it's a lot of fun to play and really shines on the Dingoo.

First time I played Powder was way back when I bought my first flash card for my DS Lite. I really want to get into the Dingoo version, but the controls really bother me, so I've modified the source code to reflect DS/GBA controls (since Powder was originally developed for the GBA platform in the first place.)  It's been challenging to say the least since I don't have an Ubuntu machine up and running right now. Cygwin is hardly the optimal development environment when building programs for Linux-based devices.

If you want to get your POWDER fix on the native firmware, here is a GBA homebrew ROM.

yep, i've had the 117 version loaded in my gameboy micro+ez flash iv for a while now, but it really doesn't compare to a native build of powder for the dingoo.

The farthest i've gotten to compiling powder for dingux was gcc compiling the *.o module files. Ld.exe kept returning errors (most probably directory paths weren't correctly set in cygwin), and i ragequit after that. It will have to wait when i build a dedicated ubuntu box from my spare parts lying around.
