New guy here with a380 questions
« on: June 20, 2012, 03:24:15 AM »
First of all, I'm new to the entire open source world. In fact, the only understanding I have with emulation is on PC and android (and with android, it's downloading the emulator and ROMs and pretending I'm 7 years old again). Anywho, I recently purchased an a380. I needed something small yet could play primarily GBA, GBC, GB, MD, SNES, and NES ROMs. So far, I like this system except the NES emulator is very sluggish, I'd say the games play at half speed. the other emulators play at a decent speed, slightly choppy on certain games. It will not play Star Fox or Super Mario RPG. The games will open, but the unit will stall out and I'll have to shut it off. Other than those issues, the system works acceptably.

Now please forgive me. I do understand there is a search button, and I do understand how to use it. It's just taken me a long while to get any time to look anything up on this device. I'm Army active duty and a father and I have very little time for myself anymore, except at work which will be occupied by my a380 whenever I have any downtime. If anyone can give me any pointers, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm confident in my abilities to do any kind of software modifications, including debugging and hardware accelerations like processor overclocking, so don't be timid to suggest anything. Thanks in advance!

By the way, it says version V2.0016 and the navigation seems set up sorta like the PSP.

hello phattacorider,

a380 is a nice device but it is not accurate... nes is slow and gb,gbc are too fast... but since it is open sourced console, we hope things may change in future... other emulators working fine but not up to scratch the hardware..

there is a firmware upgrade and some open source emulators....

but you need to spend some time on internet to get required files and games...

but since it is open sourced console,

The sources were released?

:( Should have gotten an A320.

The A380 is an A320 with inferior software sold for $20 more. And is made by a bunch of lying douche bags (Dingoo Tech).

Says it's defective and send it back. :P Use the money to get an A320 (or wait for the upcoming GCW).  ;)

Thanks for the reply guys! When I was looking at the a380, I was comparing it to the a320 and I was sold by the technical specifications. It's sad that there aren't any retail stores that have this kind of device on display to test out, I would have definitely turned away from the a380. I noticed while playing an SNES game, the save/load state feature doesn't work and it appears the system doesn't create a save file, so when I'm playing Donkey Kong Country and I save the game at a save point, I can't go back to that save point. Also, with the system the shoulder buttons are reversed along with the "Y" and "X" buttons. The buttons apparently default this way, and I can't switch the "L" and "R" functions. I think I'll be keeping this device, keep up with this kind of video gaming, but I might end up investing in the a320 unless you guys can convince me otherwise. I spent about $30 on the a380, I work with a guy who had it but knew nothing about it, thinking it was a Game Boy Advance. In use of the exquisite "search" feature, I have found many good things said about the a320, but nothing about me experienced "issues" with the a380. Does the a320 run the NES at a better speed than the a380? I understand there's software available to overclock the processor in the a320, so that's a plus. Again, any advice anyone can shoot out there will be greatly appreciated!

From what you've been seeing about the A380, and from what i know firsthand about the A320, i'm sure you'll be far more pleased with the A320. It's been out since 2009 and as you can see as a testament to this site, there has been ALOT of work done on it software wise as well as continued support, for both sides of the house, Native OS and Dingux (Dingoo Linux).

I myself prefer Native OS, as i don't have that much time in the day to fanaggle with the complexities of Dingux, but i can assure you that the NES emulators on it, both the stock and the best version of DingooNES (V1.1) (which i'm told is fceux based) emulation is far more faithful than the current A380 emulator, basically right on the money.
The Dingoo A320, at a varying $70-$100 online, is a great investment. I own 3 of them for personal use and resell A320s with the best Native OS emulators pre-loaded (20 different retro-videogame systems so far).

That aside, welcome to the wonderful world of open-sourced, hangheld gaming.

There's a reason why I made the custom firmware available.  ;D
Perhaps you may have a look at it.  ;)
