Dingoo Mega Pack
« on: November 12, 2009, 11:09:47 pm »
Andross posted a great suggestion in the Project Ideas and Requests thread:
Quote
A good tool would be an equivalent to the dingux local pack. This would make it easy for someone to just grab all of the available homebrew. This is especially useful for those like me who have been almost exclusively following dingux homebrew and would like an easy way to get into this other side of dingoo homebrew. Thanks to anyone who considers this idea!

So let's discuss!
We need to discuss which games and emulators to include, and the folder structure.
I personally would like the pack to consist of good stuff and not everything you can find.
Oh and if someone has a better name suggestion, feel free to speak up ;)

Let's start with the folder structure.
How do you people store your games anyway? I just throw most of it in the 3D folder myself.

This post is about native, not dingux.

I've deleted a bunch of posts because of confusion and offtopic. Please do not be offended if your post was deleted.

Harteex, please clarify. I think this is about the native firmware, right? This thread being in the native firmware part of the forum and all... ;)

I store my ROMs in folders appropriate for the extension: LNX, SMD, SMS, GG, etc. Mostly following the original folder structure. Apps go in '3D' or some subfolder of it.

Yes that's basically how I do it too. A suggestion could however be to move applications (StopWatch, overclock apps etc) to their own folder called Apps or Applications. Although that could be confusing due to the file extension. Or what do you think?

As for roms, we can of course not include commercial roms, but we could include especially good PD roms.

More opinions would be great  8)

What about calling those things "gadgets?" or "tools?"

OK, well, I am...and the syntax was not standard American English, the way it is normally spoken in this country, and hence my difficulty in understanding it.

I don't wanna be offensive, but America is two vast continents.
Really sorry for offtopic and I sure didn't post it just to show off.

Responded in PM, so as not to further side-track this.  But I was offended just there.

The menu only lets you select between 3D Games and Emulators (or Interesting games). It would be perfect to have a third menu entry, but I guess that's not going to happen. Best alternative would be to make a new dir 'Apps'. That name would stay relatively close to the top of the screen so you can select it without browsing directories too much.

We cannot even include boot roms as required by LynGOO for example. That's a real shame, but nothing much can be done about it.

I think an Apps folder would be good then.
I also like tools as suggested by Kalisiin, but as you say, Apps would stay close to the top.

So basically:
\GAME\3D - Games goes here
\GAME\Apps - Applications goes here

I think we'll go with this for now, if no one else wants to give a suggestion.

Here's a list of the currently available emulators:
ColecOO - Will be included
DOOEngine - Will be included
GBC & GB - Will NOT be included, GnuBoy will be used instead
GnuBoy - Will be included
NGP - ??
O2EM A320 - Will be included
PIE - ??
SMS & GG - Will NOT be included, SmsGGOO will be used instead
SmsGGOO - Will be included
WS - ??
LynGOO - Will be included (even though we can't include the bios)

Please tell me if I have missed any emulator.
For the ones with ??: I haven't tried these and don't know if they are good / worth it. If anyone has any experience with any of those, please post.

NeoGeo Pocket? I dunno you mightve left that out on purpose but i thought id say it. I think it works on native. Dont know if its worth it though.

EDIT: Just figured out that NGP was up there. Must of just read over it and didnt realise. Sorry.

Wasn't impressed with WS or NGP emulation.

Both had numerous glitches and sound issues. NGP was very slow when it worked at all.

Was really hoping they would see further development :(

For the native emulators (and any additional native emus), all that really matters is the location of our roms right?

I personally have my "3D game" renamed to "Apps" and "Interesting game" renamed to "Roms"

Under "Roms" I have a folder for each system, and then if there are lots of games, folders for groups of letters (e.g. "A-F", "G-L", "M-R", etc)

As the "Apps" and "Roms" menu items look in the same place, this would probably cause a problem if you decided to categorise any native homebrew in a similar way, because for each category you would see seemingly empty directories for files from the other (as the "Roms" can't see .app files, and "Apps" can't see roms)

Just something to consider

This is exactly how I have my native Dingoo set up too.

This is not supposed to be a firmware, so what 3D games and Interesting games are called doesn't matter.
It's basically going to be a zip file with emulators and games (mostly dingoo-games, not that many roms, since most roms would be illegal for us to redistribute) which you can unpack in the root folder.
So therefor we just care about the structure of the folders.

Yes if you go through roms/interesting games you will not see the .app files. But do you think two folders are ok to have for .app files or would you rather just have one (with sub directories)?

I think having two sub-directories would be the best way to do it, to separate the folder structure for .app files from that of any roms as much as possible, so something like:

/GAME/
  • Apps/
    • (some folder here, if there is categorization)
    • (or even .app files here)
  • Roms/
    • Genesis/
      • 0-G/
        • Adventures of Batman and Robin.bin
        • Afterburner II.bin
      • H-N/
        • HardBall '95.bin
        • Incredible Hulk.bin
      • etc./
    • SNES/
      • 0-G/
        • 3 Ninjas Kick Back (U).smc
        • 7th Saga, The (U).smc
      • H-N/
        • Hagane (U).smc
        • Hal's Hole in One Golf (U).smc
      • etc./

That way, when browsing either into "3D Game" or "Interesting Game", you are presented with "Apps" or "Roms", and you can then browse to the appropriate content.

ok..

GAMES/3D - Dingoo native games
GAMES/Apps - Dingoo applications (overclock, stopwatch etc)

Probably:

GAMES/Roms/[system] - If we include PD roms, system is NES, SNES, etc

Currently I have:
GAME
* ColeCOO 3.1
* DOOENGINE 0.9c
* GNUBOY (incl no-paw fix)
* LynGOO 1.0 (note, required lynxboot.img)
* O2EM 1.0
* SmsGGOO 3.1

GAME/3D
* ManicMiner 1.1
* MineSweeper 1.1.0
* Mushroom Roulette 1.1
* SameGoo 1.1
* spoout 2.0
* XRickOO 1.0

GAME/Apps
* Overclock directory (all the overclock .apps)
* GooPlayer 1.1
* StopWatch 1.0

I have also made a batch file which looks for conflicting emulators and alerts the user.

Feel free to suggest more things.
I don't think we should include Wonderswan and Neo Geo Pocket emulators, as it seems like those works very poorly.
I think I'll add AstroLander aswell whenever I have recompiled it to embed its resources.

Next question, should we include the english Dingoo Digital games?
My suggestion is that we do include Dingoo Digital games that are in English, or those Chinese ones where the language doesn't affect the gameplay. We don't include the ones that came with the Dingoo, they can be made available in a separate pack if people wants it.

Should the pack even include PD games at all? A lot of them are really shitty and not worth playing (feel free to prove me wrong).

I think are some good PD games (if you refer to Dingoo PD games).
SameGoo is solid if you like SameGame (well I could be biased on this one ;))
Spout is really cool I think. I have not tried XRickOO or ManicMiner, but those are remakes of classic games, and seems to be well recieved by the community. Haven't played Mushroom Roulette that much.

Although I will remove Minesweeper, because it seems like you can only play with a small field with max 3 mines, which makes it a bit dull.

New games I've found:
* Formula1 (a clone of a Game&Watch game)
* Hell Striker II (From Dingoo, also known as World Road)
* Landlord (from Dingoo)
* Nosebreaker (from Dingoo)
* Overlord Fighter (in chinese but you really don't need to know chinese to play) EDIT: This is really called "Yi-chi King Fighter"
* Platinum Sudoku
* PoPo Bash (in chinese but very playable without understanding it, a Puzzle Bobble clone)
* Rubido

Edit: Oh and by suggestion from omgmog, readmes will be placed in TXT/README so that they are easily read with the Ebook function.

* DOOENGINE 0.9c
* GNUBOY
* LynGOO 1.0 (note, requires lynxboot.img)
* O2EM 1.0
* SmsGGOO 3.1

Games
* Formula1
* Hell Striker II (aka World Road)
* Landlord
* ManicMiner 1.1
* Mushroom Roulette 1.1
* Nosebreaker
* Platinum Sudoku
* PoPo Bash
* Rubido
* SameGoo 1.1
* Spoout 2.0
* XRickOO 1.0
* Yi-chi King Fighter

Apps
* Overclock apps
* GooPlayer 1.1
* StopWatch 1.0

Textfiles are placed in TXT/README so you can view them with the ebook reader.

There is also "check_problems.bat", which simply checks if you have other conflicting emulators, or if you miss the bios required by LynGOO.

If I don't get any more suggestions or opinions I will release tomorrow or on Sunday.

Check out XRickOO here.

No this is not a firmware, it's a pack of games and emulators. It's more like Toddler's local pack.

Na its not a custom firmware its a pack like the Local pack for Dingux. All you need in 1 pack so you dont need to go searching round to find everything.
Correct me if im wrong.
