What more you can do in Ben apart from playing games?
« on: November 08, 2010, 11:51:24 pm »
I'm a new happy owner of a BNN and I'm compiling a list of the many things you can do with this litle computer:

- take notes
- improve your console skills kung-fu
- read something: books, documentation, jokes...
- listen to music
- play videos
- record sounds
- write texts wherever you are
- collect data in a spreadsheet
- see photos
- interface with other devices
- learn programming languages
- run your own software everywhere
- play or create interactive fiction games
- (add your suggestion)

Actually, due to limited keyboard buttons, it's hard to type anything that goes beyond a-z. Working with a console or programming is a pain and involves multiple button combos.

Half of that list is exaggerated and while it's all true, it doesn't mean it will work out of the box.
To the list i'd also add:
* using dictionaries
* using wikireader
both of them with jlime distro.

Well, I know my list is very optimistic, but in fact I'm using it for some of that tasks. Okay the keyboard is too small, I've planned to add the ben a full size detachable keyboard using the serial port, a normal keyboard and a cheap MSP430 microcontroller. Since I don't have a netbook, and also don't like to carry the laptop everywhere but I carry the ben always. Right now I'm trying to improve my c++ knowledge using some tutorial downloaded in txt files and the g++ compiler. I also use Jlime and find very useful the swith windows feature.

I've to recognize that writing code has become more challenging that I thought. But writing ideas in a simple txt is one of my main uses of Ben.

You're right, you shouldn't write whole, elaborate projects on this thing, but it works well for small stuff, like writing a function, or when you're on the bus and get an idea of how you can make things easier or optimize your functions.

Or just take notes.

Or girls phone numbers at the bar. Ho ho ho.
